Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and loving this kid lovers….

I was reading the news this morning and came across this story on the nets!

Off Haiti, Charlton man on hospital ship

Merchant marine is vessel’s engineer
By Donna Boynton TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF -
Worchester, Massachusetts
CHARLTON Connor Starr has saved about $200 over the past several months to buy a basset hound puppy.

However, the 9-year-old recently told his mother, Chrystina, that he wants to donate his puppy money to the American Red Cross, thinking that his money can help the relief organization tend to the people in earthquake-ravaged Haiti faster, which in turn will help his dad come home sooner.

His father, Stephen Starr, 45, is off the coast of Haiti on the USNS Comfort, the Navy hospital ship that has been providing medical services to those wounded in the deadly Jan. 12 earthquake.

bilde
Mr. Starr, a member of the merchant marine, is the chief engineer of the Comfort, making sure the propulsion plant and the ship’s systems are in proper running order to support the hospital and medical treatment facility.
bilde
Mr. Starr was requested for the Haiti mission. He has served on the Comfort during several other missions: during operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield in the 1990s, when wounded U.S. military personnel were treated on board.; in Operation Noble Eagle in New York after 9-11, when the Comfort provided meals, housing, medical and psychological services to volunteers and relief workers at Ground Zero; and most recently in the Persian Gulf in Operation Iraqi Freedom, when the Comfort served as a trauma center for wounded military personnel and injured Iraqi civilians.
“This has had more of an impact because it is such a humanitarian mission,” Mr. Starr said. “The devastation down there is just so overwhelming, and to see what these people have gone through.

“The most rewarding thing is to be able to walk through the wards and see all the children and people that we have been able to care for,” he said.

Mrs. Starr, who has spoken to her husband often by phone, said seeing such structural and human damage has been hard on him.

“He’s holding up, but it has been hard for him,” Mrs. Starr said. “There have been some very difficult things for him to see there are a lot of children being treated, and their parents aren’t there with them. That hits home that hits the soft spot because we have two children.”

Hard also, was Mr. Starr having to leave before his daughter Caitlyn’s 12th birthday.

“I was home in Charlton when I got the call to go, but hoped to be home for her birthday,” Mr. Starr said. Instead, Mr. Starr called his daughter from the Comfort, the only birthday present she wanted, Mrs. Starr said.

Like her brother, 12-year-old Caitlyn is prone to helping those in need. After Hurricane Katrina, Caitlyn organized a fundraiser for pets in need.

Mr. Starr does not know how long his mission will last. Mrs. Starr said that while the family misses him, they are honored that he was requested to be part of that mission.

“The kids understand that there are people who need him more than we do,” Mrs. Starr said.

Awwww…how sweet. Too bad a rescue doesn’t have puppies right now. Wouldn’t that be cool if we could get him a puppy through rescue and he could give his $200 to Haiti? I would chip in for a puppy for him that’s for sure. Cuz yes Cat, he does need a hound for comfort!

I would like to see this child get a free Basset Hound. Maybe not a puppy but a young Basset with some housetraining might be the best way to go with a first dog.

I admire Mr. Starr and his family they make the world a better place.

Who says the youth of America don’t care about anyone but themselves. This boy proves there is hope for the future. I agree he deserves a young hound too.

When I searched for a rescue near Massachusetts New England Basset Hound Rescue came up. I didn’t go as far to see if they had pups tho. I wonder if his heart is really set on a puppy. I agree with Maureen if this is his first dog. But…you don’t want to disappoint the kid either. Maybe they are familiar with puppies. You’d almost have to talk to the Mom to find out details.
