Fasten your seat belts, it’s going to be a bumpy blog…..
Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Bumpy Blog Lovers. OMD, it has been crazy this past week for the OH blue eyed boys. At least that is what I call them. Each boy has one blue eye…
Do my dear readers remember the story of the crazy woman who dumped her 4 bassets and 1 blood hound at the the dog park? I did 2 blogs on the case.
Well, here is the update…As some of you may have read, a plea was sent out over the Daily Drool to help 2 of the remaining 5 hounds that were dumped and were still at the pound. Hum, still at the pound huh? Sup with that? So, I jumped on the pound’s PetFinder site and I could not find the hounds. Interesting. Round about this time I am getting e-mails about the duo and can I help, blog, or whatever. I always do my home work so off the bat I e-mailed the pound and asked their contact why they were not on PetFinder.
Come to find out, Stewie and Mikey were both food aggressive. At this pound and many others if a dog is deemed food aggressive they can be put down without question. Hum, I did not realize that but I guess it makes sense for some breeds. But for a basset hound? Anyway, Stewie was only food aggressive towards other dogs coming to his bowl. This is our Stewie….
Chaps has been food aggressive his entire life. I never feed Chaps and Emma together. Goodness, she is already blind she does not need to lose an ear!
Mikey was deemed food aggressive to a fake hand. That cracked me up. When they put a fake hand into Mikey’s bowl he growled but did not bite the fake hand. Who puts their hand in a dog’s food bowl?
Anyway, here is our Mikey the fake hand hater!
Heather is the woman who is their advocate and was given some time to find a rescue that might be better suited to deal with the “food issue”. Yes, us basset hound owners know all about food issues!
So, as I was contemplating the fate of these blue eyed boys I get a DING! Incoming e-mail! It’s from Erica….
“Hey Cat!
Just wanted to send a reminder that if you know of a transport needed to the east coast, I’d be happy to help out! We will be leaving Cinti the morning of Sunday, August 22 to travel back east. ”
Ha! Can you believe that? The boys might be able to land in a rescue up north east! Dogs from the South always fare better in the North. In my entire rescue life I have never sent a hound south. It just does not happen in my world. My mind begins to spin…..
If I am going to get them in spot in a Northern Basset Hound Rescue I better learn more about these hounds. So, I ask Heather at the pound my questions…
Age, neutered, HW status, medical status, all of the biggies that matter for rescues and adoption.
Stewie age 2, Mikey age 3. Neither neutered. Neither vetted and the past owner who is now facing criminal charges claims to not remember when they have been to the vet. Heather tells me that for 75 bucks a piece she can have them vetted and neutered.
Hum…..75 bucks a piece, almost seems like a no brainer. Heather is also willing to keep them until the 21st. So, basically at that point the hounds are mine. GULP
OK, I have over a week to get them a hard to find spot in a coveted basset hound rescue. I have significantly raised their profile!
Young Good Looking Hounds
Neutered
HEART WORM NEGATIVE
Totally vetted
Perfect Heath Certificate and ready for transport
I check on them everyday and the boys are getting a bit sad as you can imagine. The days are ticking by and the boys have no takers as of this morning:(
The e-mails are flying and the networkers are tap dancing. I spent the entire day today working on their case.
Then, DING! It’s the wonderful Shelly Gordon of ABC (All Bassets Cherished) Rescue in New York State….
It was so hopeful! GUESS WHAT? They have a van coming to the town next to mine Sat at 2:00AM. They are meeting GABR to pickup some homeless hounds!
IS THERE ROOM FOR THE BLUE EYED BOYS?
Stewie grabs a drink of water while he waits…..
And waits to see if he will find a place at ABC….
Mikey is also waiting…….
OK, I am at the door. Someone open these bars please…….I am ready to blow this pop stand!
Then the ultimate call comes in, from Gary Penny, President of ABC!
THE BLUE EYED BOYS ARE CHERISHED!
Yipeeeeeeeeeeee
Stewie is totally jazzed!
Mikey is all like, wait, What? I am loving me some New York!
Yes, Mikey we are all loving us some New York!
Grandma and I are schlepping up to Dayton in the morning. We will collect the blue eyed boys from the shelter and stash them in the basement until the 2:00am transport meeting. Is there an Ap for that?
hehehehe
Lastly, I did not want to needlessly stress out Basset Hound Town residents so I tried to do all of the heavy lifting and hopefully report good news instead of stressed out news. It was Emma’s suggestion. She is the Public Relations Official for BHT!
More ending the bumpy ride later…Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

I just wanted to add this in the comment section. Eva, the head of Basset Hound Rescue of OH is in the hospital and started dialysis today. She has kidney disease and needs a kidney.
Eva has been helping homeless basset hounds in OH for decades. When BHT stepped up to help the blue eyed boys I did not know this. I only knew that she was full up to the brim, boarding hounds and could not take on any more.
I also know that she was worried about these boys very much. I am thrilled that we could ease a tiny bit of her burden and get these boys out of this shelter. There time is up tomorrow.
Our thoughts and drool are with you Eva. Get better FAST. We need you.
Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma
OK, I just got off the bumpy ride … laugh, cry, laugh …. whew. Cat, I love you and what you go through to help these poor, sad hounds. Bless you and grandma.
Cat you PAWSOME!!! These hounds are sure lucky to have you as their Angel. Looks like our funds
needs some more $$$. Don’t think our $65 will go far for these two. How can I get some $$ to you fast!!! or do I send a donation to the Rescue group? Love you and all you do for our special four legged friends. XOXO
Oh BJ! You are so kind. I am the one paying their bills, with the help of the 65 bucks we have. I will blog more about that later. I hope to do some fun stuff like I did for Trooper. I have some things to sell in their honor.
Love, Cat
Cat you have a heart of gold!! Will look forward to see what you have planned. You are the VERY BEST!! Check the PO the first of the week….Love you!!!
Oh, thank you BJ! Anything you send will go right to the Blue Eyed Boys. I love you too. My sis!
Cat
I agree OM! Bumpy ride it was. So glad that we’re on a smooth trail now. Cat, I just knew it had to work out. I’m so sorry that it was such a stressful situation. Saving bassets, or any animal for that matter, can get so overwhelming. Being involved in rescue for 2 years, I know. You did a great job Cat! What a wonderful person you are.
Thank you so very much Erica for offering to transport. Thank you so very much Shelly for contacting Cat and saving these boys! What a wonderful story.
Food aggressive? Ha! No, not bassets. Geez. I have 4 bassets. 2 of them are very food aggressive. All of mine have their place to eat and nobody gets in anybody else’s space while the others are eating. That’s how they have been trained and that’s how they all should be trained when food aggression is an issue. It’s not that hard to deal with. It sure isn’t worth putting them down over.
Cat,
Next Friday is payday, I will try and send a check to you to help out with the costs.
Thank you for all your efforts.
