My Julian Turns 11 years old today!

July 9th, 2008 - 10:10 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and Julian Lovers! Today was my nephew’s 11th birthday. I just got home from his party and we had a hootenanny! He is one special guy.

Ever since he was born his parents loved to play Tom Petty in the car. Needless to say, he loves Tom Petty and can sing a lot of his songs by heart. So, last night his parents took him to see Tom Petty live! At a place called Riverbend. It is an outdoor amphitheater right on the Ohio River. They were in the fifth row. Julian sang most of the songs by heart along with Tom Petty. Everyone was standing and cheering. My sister said that Tom was looking at Julian and smiling. How special is that? Everyone knows that one of life’s questions is, “What was your first concert?” So tell us. What was your first concert?

NO I WON’T BACK DOWN!

P.S. Don’t be shy about leaving a comment. It is fun! Please, don’t back down! hehehehe

Emma is a sun goddess!

July 9th, 2008 - 9:09 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and laying in the sun lovers! I am not one of them! Ever since Emma was a young pup she has loved to lay in the baking sun. I have to watch her like a hawk! If she had her way, she would bake forever on the pavers! Here is her favorite spot, right next to our Lady of the Basset Hounds!

Today is was 100 degrees in the shade. I had to have a gate constructed on my back porch to close when I leave to run errands. If I don’t close it I am a afraid she will sun burn. Oh lawzy, lawzy! What’s a Mom to do? Emma’s dermatologist does not want her laying to long and she also said that she has some pretty tender parts on that under belly and beyond! Yikes!

Oh Emmers!

Howllo Fellow Hound and Grant Money Lovers: ATTENTION 501(C)3 RESCUE ORGANIZATIONS!

Take a look at this link. The Humane Society of the US is taking applications from 501(c)3 rescue organizations to be considered for Grants. These Grants are being awarded due to the housing situation in the USA. It’s bad for a lot of folks, and even worse for a lot of pets. Bless all of you rescue workers. I will continue to do my part in an effort to raise awareness and money.

Here is the link:

Fresno Basset Hound’s scary 4th has happy ending!

July 6th, 2008 - 9:09 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and happy ending lovers:

Well the dreaded 4th of July is over for pets who hate it. This news story out of Fresno really brings home the fact that you have to take extra precautions on the 4th of July. Here is the link to the video that features a wayward basset hound, frightened by the fireworks.

FRESNO BASSET REUNITES WITH OWNER AFTER RUNNING SCARED!

START OF ARTICLE

By Amanda Perez
7/5/2008 Fresno, CA (KFSN) — More than a hundred valley families are hoping to be reunited with their lost pets after Fourth of July fireworks caused many of the animals to run away.

The Central California SPCA in Fresno says today has been the busiest day of the year as people bring in the animals they found wandering the streets and others look for their lost friends.

This Basset Hound was just one of nearly 200 dogs brought to the Central California SPCA Saturday morning in hopes of finding his owners. Caitlin Lujan, found dog, says “We found him in the middle of the street. And we just put him in the car and took him home and we put up posters and we were driving around today.” Kellie Lujan, found dog, says “He’s a really good dog. He’s nice and playful.”

This little Pomeranian mix was also found Friday night. She’s still shaking after a scary night. Jaci Dalton found dog, says “We were watching the neighbors shooting off their fireworks, and she came ripping down the middle of the street, just scared to death.”

I hope all of the hounds in basset hound town are OK.

Anything for hounds of Arkansas – By TOM SCHRECK

Anything for hounds of Arkansas

By TOM SCHRECK
First published: Thursday, July 3, 2008
A couple of weeks ago, a puppy mill owner in Arkansas decided to get out of the business. He still had 11 basset hounds he used as breeders and when he called the Ozark Mountain Basset Hound Rescue Organization, he let them know they had seven days or he would take care of them on his own.

The problem was that there was no room in the Ozarks for the hounds. You see, operating a dog rescue operation can be an impossible task. There are too many dogs, not enough volunteers or money, and not enough people willing to adopt a rescue.

But dog people are a fanatic bunch, and they don’t take it lightly when some of their own are being mistreated. Phil Guinn of the Ozark rescue group called around to the informal network of basset hound rescue organizations. One of those calls came to Gary Penney, president of All Bassets Cherished, the New York state basset rescue.

In no time, he had foster homes arranged for all 11 hounds and three members were in a truck driving to Arkansas. They got the bassets, dubbed them the “Arkansas 11” and immediately took them to a vet where they were spayed and neutered and treated for a host of ailments caused by the conditions they had lived in. The bill is over $3,000 and it’s climbing.

The cost never matters to these people. They’ll find a way to pay for it.

You should know a little bit about basset hounds. They score the absolute lowest in obedience and they have a certain aroma that never really goes away, no matter how often you bathe them. They steal your food, bark incessantly and may eat your furniture. They climb in bed with you and hog the center.

There’s something else about the basset hound. They love people unconditionally.

My wife and I live with Wilbur and Riley. Wilbur barks at three in the morning and has eaten three separate holes in our leather love seat. He does what he wants when he wants.

One of the things he wants to do the most is go to work with me at Wildwood Programs. Wildwood serves people with developmental disabilities, and though Wilbur has no interest in doing anything I ask him to do, he’ll do everything the kids want him to. He helps quiet kids socialize, he calms stressed kids down and he provides companionship for kids who don’t feel like exercising. He also goes with adults in our programs to visit old folks, where he joins them on the couch while they read.

Riley visits veterans at the VA, where he steals lunches, knocks over cups of coffee and generally makes a racket. Nobody seems to mind.

Basset hounds remind me that couches, sleep and my own self-absorption aren’t nearly as important as I think they are.

I write a murder mystery series where a rescued basset hound is the protaganist’s sidekick, and you can guess who winds up the hero most of the time. The basset hound is the main character’s moral compass.

Not everybody gets the basset hound thing, but they should. The people at All Bassets Cherished get it. When the call came from Arkansas, there never was any question about what they’d do.

Tom Schreck is director of communications at Wildwood Programs. He is the author of the murder mysteries “TKO” and “On the Ropes,” featuring Al the basset hound.
