Emma is home from her doctor’s appointment

September 9th, 2008 - 5:05 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and Emma’s health lovers! It is so heart warming to me that so many of you follow her journey of blindness. We really appreciate it.

I was surprised at how many dogs were at the eye doctor today.

There was 1 boxer, 1 standard black poodle, 2 bichon frises, 2 daschunds, 1 jack russell terrier, 1 mini poode, 1 shitzu, a cocker and 3 cats. That was all in the span of 2 hours! Wow! Most were elderly dogs and from what I could tell and ease drop on, Emma was by far the youngest, and (the loudest.) I am also pretty sure she was the only blind one in the group.

Emma’s diagnosis was not great, but hopefully treatable. She had, what the doctor said, was a deep laceration of the cornea. There is no way to tell how she got it. He has her on 2 different types of new medications. I need to administer them every 4 hours and he told me to set my alarm during the night to make sure she gets her treatment every 4 hours for 2 weeks. He told me,

“her prosthetic is more important than your sleep.”

I totally agreed and then we drove straight to McDonalds for her special treat of french fries. I went inside and asked the employee if he could flash fry a few potatoes without salt for my girl. She has a food allergy as most of you know. I thought it was worth a shot.

The server looked at me funny, and I said,

“It is for my dog who just came from the vet and she needs a treat.”

The server turned on his heels, went to the french fry area, dunked a few potatoes in the cage thing for a few seconds, patted the grease off of them, wrapped them in aluminum foil and then handed them to me. He leaned in and said,

“no charge.”

As I wiped a few tears away, he patted my hand. A big line was forming behind me so I could not linger. I think I also saw his boss heading towards the front so I scurried off. The kindness of strangers. That small gesture meant the world to Emma and I.

When Emma got home it was so funny. She ran like she has never run blind before down the hallway right to her bed. She grabbed her duck toy and started flipping it in the air. Then she sunk as if to say, “thank God I am home.”

Chaps was busy smelling our clothes but quickly tucked in next to Emma.

He likes to lay by the window and alert Emma of everything that is happening.

She was just happy to be home, next to the big guy.

More updates later, maybe at 4:00 every morning when my alarm goes off!

Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

Howllo Fellow Hound and Angel Lovers:

Look at this totally cool rendition that my dear friend Angel did for us. I love art work like this and I will treasure it forever!

My Mom was admiring it. I have a really nice golden frame with similar swirls!

Good job my dear Angel, you have just provided me with her birthday gift! hehehehehehe!

She will be thrilled. Thank you so much.

Emma has a fake eye appointment today.

September 9th, 2008 - 6:06 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and Emma lovers: Our girl has a fake eye appointment today. The last time she went to the eye doctor it was because I saw a funny spot on the prosthetic. Well, that funny spot is back. She has been on the same medicine for months. I will let you know what the doctor says.

Chaps’ grandpa will hold his paw while we are gone.

Everyone have a great day. Your friends at bassethoundtown.com

Chaps was howling in his sleep last night!!!

September 8th, 2008 - 2:02 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and Sleep Howler Lovers: Has this ever happened with your hound? Chaps has done it about 5 or 6 times in the 5 years I have had him. It is the strangest thing. He sleep howls. The sleep howl sounds nothing like the awake howl. The sleep howl is higher and much more plaintive. I gently woke him up, just in case he was having a bad dream. Wow, it is really strange. Here he is getting ready to howl on the back porch, fully awake! LOL!

Do you have a sleep howler?

More Chappers updates later….Cat, Chaps and Emma

We noticed leaves falling yesterday!

September 8th, 2008 - 9:09 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and Fall is coming lovers: Yesterday on our walk, Chaps, Emma and I noticed that the leaves are changing just slightly. They are also falling very slowing. This really intrigued Emma. She could feel them landing on her back. She would lift her head up and gently sniff the air. It was so pretty.

Our Emma is amazing. She is so comfortable on walks and knows exactly how to follow our leads. Grandma usually has her because she pulls just a little less than the 80 pound Chaps. She loves having Chaps right by her side as well.

Every time we walk the kids I notice people in cars slowing down to get a better look. I always see smiling faces and we get lots of waves. It’s amazing how many folks on foot recount stories of bassets they once had or someone they knew had a basset. Yesterday, a lady told me that she used to work with a lady who rescued bassets in KY. How cool is that? She said that bassets were her life. I know the feeling.

Bringing smiles to peoples faces, it’s what we do! (click the pic for another full sized smile!)

More smiling later….Cat, Chaps and Emma

P.S. I would love to know who that basset rescue lady was. I might have to stop by that woman’s home again and see if she can remember her name. She lives on the way to the park.

Did you know that Marilyn Monroe had a basset?

September 7th, 2008 - 5:05 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and Marilyn lovers: OK, I am one of both. Marilyn Monroe and Marilyn Brazzle of the House of Puddles.

Did you know that Ms. Monroe had a basset hound? Well she did. His name was Hugo. Hugo was Marilyn’s hound when she was married to Arthur Miller.

The following excerpt is from the book “Marilyn Among Friends” by Sam Shaw:

It may have seemed like Beauty and the Beast to some, but Marilyn and Hugo loved one another deeply. She worried about her basset hound, especially by Hugo’s peculiar doggie hazards, such as, for instance, how to put it…the basset, as you many know, is a low-slung animal, moving close to the ground. Marilyn was anxious (she confided to me) that in hurrying over the rocky terrain of their farm. Hugo’s low penis might possibly strike a stone. She’d cry out merrily, ‘Be careful, Hugo!’.

……………………………….End of excerpt.

How cool is it that Marilyn Monroe had a basset hound? She knew what was cool!

So in honor of Hugo I have added a diamond bracelet into the HOP boutique. Want to see it?

MARILYN MONROE 14K DIAMOND BRACELET

This diamond bracelet was donated by Holly Simpson along with a huge amount of other jewels that will be displayed soon.

More joy later. Just look at the joy on her face. I know how she feels.

Cat, Chaps and Emma

One more picture for you!

I am so thrilled that Marilyn had a basset hound in her life. By the look on her face, Hugo brought her so much fun.

Joy, Joy, Joy – Joy is a Boy!

The anatomy of a rescue story – LOOOOOOOOOOONG BLOG!

September 7th, 2008 - 4:04 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and update lovers: It always amazes me how rescue stories turn out. I try to keep up with the ones that I am personally involved in. Do you remember when I blogged about these 2? It was a few weeks ago. A plea came in from the Hartford KY pound to Susan of Bluegrass. As you can see, I have attached the blog postings just to refresh your memories. Go past their pictures for the anatomy of a rescue! It’s a great story.

PLATO THE GREAT PYRENEES BASSET MIX AKA THE GREAT BASSET

ARDEN THE SKIN AND BONES BASSET

THIS IS LONG, BUT GOOD READING.

After the plea came in to Susan she e-mailed me and asked me to blog about these guys because Bluegrass Basset Rescue was full. I happened to be sitting at my desk and did it right away. I was awe struck by the face of the Great Basset and saddened by the skin and bones of the basset. After I wrote my blogs, I added them to a few basset boards I am on hoping to stir up some interest.

Of course Kip saw it and wanted both dogs. He knew that was not going to happen so he jumped in to help network the hounds and if all else failed he would some how get them to his home state of MN and network them there.

I e-mailed Susan my blogs. She then posted them on the Daily Drool in an effort to find homes or helpers.

The race was on. Gloria Tichenor of the pound said they had 24 hours and then lights out. When I called Gloria the next morning I told her what we were doing and she agreed that our efforts sounded noble and hopeful. She would give all three of them a bit more time. (all 3?) I didn’t ask any questions and promised to call her back the next day. That night and the next morning Kip and I frustrated over the fate of these kids and decided to see what the day brought. Kip wanted to help, but being so far from us, it was next to impossible, but I have seen him make impossible stuff happen, so I was not worried. Just before we hung up from talking he said, “Maybe an angel will swoop down today and save them”. I Laughed out loud, and said that is what it is going to take.

Susan at Bluegrass was full. We had to find a place for them fast. Susan was willing to pick them up but there was no place for them to go. Also, she could only keep Arden if a place did open up. Oh, it all gets so complicated. But when you have no foster homes and no money it makes rescuing hard, if not impossible.

Kentucky has 1 foster home in the entire state. If you are interested in fostering bassets for Kentucky please contact me.

Moving right along…..

So, I e-mailed Great Pyrenees Rescue of KY and sent them Plato’s picture. I was hoping that his face would do the same thing to them as it did to me. I got an e-mail back pretty quickly. They were full. They agreed he sure was cute and we had a laugh about how the whole mating thing might have happened.

So I called Gloria at the pound and updated her. I asked her if she knew of any all breed rescues we could get the (3) to. Turns out the Great Basset came in with a lab mix named BiBi and he was now in our group of needy souls! LOL! Lucky BiBi! Here is his picture.

Gloria had an idea. She said she knew of an all breed rescue that might take them while we were figuring out what to do. However, we would have to pay for vetting, food, etc.
(for the 3).

OK……. Maybe Kip could rob a bank?

I told Gloria absoultely, find out if they could take the death row threesome! They said YES and I love them.

They are HILLTOP HAVEN ANIMAL RESCUE

image

OK, remember when Kip said that “Maybe and angel will swoop down”?

Well, no truer words were ever spoken. Just as I am freaking out I get an e-mail from the angel!!!!!!!!!

START OF E-MAIL

I got your information from a blog link posted on the Daily Drool and thought you might be able to help me. You had posted (www.bassethoundtown.blog) about a basset/Great Pyrenees mix and a basset in a shelter that were slated for euthanasia on Wednesday. We lost both of our bassets to cancer eight months ago and one of them looked exactly like the basset mix in the picture so, of course, I wanted to help. We would love to adopt them but we live in Texas and recently adopted two other shelter dogs. I didn’t want these dogs put to sleep so I sent an email to the shelter (4ocanimals@ohiocounty.net) offering to sponsor them, as well as the basset’s lab friend that he came in with. I have not heard back from them and am getting ready to leave town early Thursday morning. Is there any way you could get this information to the appropriate party and have them email me so I can arrange for whatever payment information they might need? If you can help out, I would really appreciate it!

Thanks in advance,

Lynne Wendlandt
Houston, TX

END OF E-MAIL

HUH? There are angels?

Then we get this e-mail from Lynne!

START OF E-MAIL

Happy ahroos….Plato, Arden and BiBi have been sprung from jail! Delsie (of Hilltop) sent me some pictures but I don’t think the three of them are quite ready for their close ups, yet 🙂

(note from Cat, I did not add the pictures because they basically look the same as the pitiful pics we already have. Sigh)

She said they looked pretty dang pitiful and she’s right. I’m sure we’ll get that taken care of, though! I’ve already spoken to the vet and given him the payment info. He said he would be calling me with an estimate when they come in and Delsie is also going to keep me posted so, of course, I’ll forward everything I get to ya’ll.

We’re leaving for North Carolina in the morning and will be back on Tuesday night but I’ll be checking my email at least a couple of times a day so I’m sure I’ll be talking to ya’ll. If there’s any kind of emergency or anything.

Now, everyone breath a deep sigh of relief and go have a glass of wine!

Lynne

END OF E-MAIL

Lynne did all of this in honor of her ATB bassets. Look how much her basset Bubba looks like Plato! Of course that is Bubba in the middle. Look how much her hound Turvey looks like BiBi. Remarkable.

Well my dear friends, if you have read this entire Looooooooooooong blog I am sure you are wondering about where we are now. It is only fitting that I let Lynne tell you!

START OF E-MAIL

Hi everyone….we’re back from North Carolina and I just wanted to keep everyone posted. I spoke to the vet on Wednesday and everyone is heartworm negative and in good health…yippee! Plato and BiBi were already fixed and Arden is being scheduled for her spay. The last I heard from Delsie is that Plato is being adopted by a single man (a dentist) in Indiana with a 30 acre farm….! A family in New Haven, KY has inquired about Arden and BiBi is going to become a Yankee. She’s being adopted by a family with two little boys in New York. That should be great since she’s only a pupster and will probably love being in a family with kids.

That’s all I know for now but I’ll pass along whatever updates I get.

END OF E-MAIL FROM LYNNE

Hey Lynne – can you pass along some of your angel magic as well?

What a story. Can you imagine these three? One week ago they are at the mercy of strangers and then the next week they have a forever home. It took 20 people, hundreds of e-mails and Lynne’s check book to make it happen. I say 20 people, that is just a guess. If you count all of the people who read our pleas, it was in the thousands. But all it takes is the perfect combination of the perfect people to make more happiness in the world happen.

More good rescue news later, Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

P.S. I left out some of the boring stuff………

BREAKING NEWS……….
ARDEN IS ADOPTED AND HER FAMILY IS TOTALLY IN LOVE!!!
She goes in for her spay tomorrow and her new family gets her very soon. They are soooooooooooooo excited. I bet little Miss bag of bones is not that way for long!
