Chaps grabs his back pack and heads off for school…

September 16th, 2009 - 11:11 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Chaps heading off to school lovers! Today we received a phone call from a librarian at a local grade school about our Mayor! She saw the yellow pages and recalled seeing us walking in town! So, she googled Chaps Yellow Pages and found us. Now that is one enterprising librarian! So, Chaps is grabbing his back pack which is full of fun stuff……

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Boswell’s Life of Boswell Lovers……

This is a never before seen sketch from the great artist and author Evelyn Leavens. This was a sketch that she did while writing the famous book, Boswell’s Life of Boswell. She is my dear friend and mentor. I am planning a tribute section to her on my website that will be showcasing soon.

Search for an Ophthalmologist in your area…

September 14th, 2009 - 5:05 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and needing a great search tools like this lovers: OK – I was just reading some backed up e-mails and I am so happy I took the time to review all of the links because I found this about searching for an ophthalmologist in your area. I am going to add this link to several sections of my website so we can keep it handy.

IMG_3436

It’s critical that you make sure you get a definitive diagnosis. You need to know what the animal is going blind from so you can decide on the proper course of treatment and so you can know what to expect in the future. If your vet can’t give you a definitive diagnosis, please insist on a referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist.

SEARCH FOR AN OPHTHALMOLOGIST IN YOUR AREA

{ LOCATE AN OPHTHALMOLOGIST }
{ SEARCH FOR OPHTHALMOLOGISTS }
This list contains ONLY those board certified veterinary ophthalmologists who have agreed to have their contact information posted on this web site. You will receive the best results if you search by state, since there are typically only a couple ophthalmologists per state. Some rural states do not have resident ophthalmologists. If your search by state returns nothing, then you may wish to search a border state.
Search for an ophthalmologist
(Note: Search by location or doctor’s name…species information is also provided when available.)
Search for an ophthalmologist by species
(Note: all ophthalmologists treat dogs and cats.)
{ SEARCH FOR PROFESSIONAL OPHTHALMOLOGIST SPEAKERS }
If you would like to invite a board certified ophthalmologist to speak at your next conference, the following database search will provide you with basic contact and topic information. Please contact the speakers directly to receive a copy of their CV, expanded topics and speaking schedules/fees.

The sad truth is that some vets simply aren’t very good at diagnosing eye diseases. They often don’t have the diagnostic equipment required to make definitive diagnoses, like slit-lamps and Tono-Pens. The eye is complex, the symptoms are often confusing and/or hard to identify, and many vet schools offer little in ophthalmology training to vet students.

One important point to make: Many people think blindness is the end result of the disease process, and that once an animal is blind, nothing more will happen to the eye. Not true! Blindness is only a symptom of disease. The eye disease may often continue to run its course, causing pain and discomfort, long after the animal is blind. Glaucoma, for example, can be terribly painful, and humans with the disease say it’s like living with a constant, throbbing headache at best and with a head-splitting migraine headache at worst.

So eye diseases require the best possible veterinary care. And the earlier you can treat it, the better your chances of preserving vision.

Also: Old age is not a cause of blindness! You wouldn’t believe how often we hear that an animal is going blind “because he’s old.”

The best resource we can recommend is a fabulous book called “Living with Blind Dogs” by Caroline Levin. You can order this book directly from Amazon here.

Buttermilk makes herself at home at House of Puddles…

September 14th, 2009 - 4:04 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and wondering about Buttermilk lovers: Remember Buttermilk, the old gal that was found wandering the back roads of GA? The old gal that GABH scooped up and held until they found her place at House of Puddles? You remember Buttermilk. Well, check her out now! Here is our girl now, trying to fit in at HOP…..

Bellyup Buttermilk

LOL! She is such a lover of life. Those are Wendi’s legs she is laying between. Wendi is a founder of another retirement home in FL, for Sr. Bassets called, Senior Hounds Abound. As you will recall, Chaps is in the running to be on their 2010 calendar which is their biggest fundraiser of the year. Hey, that just reminded me, let me go look and see how he is doing…..

Well, well, well, the Mayor has a respectable 78 votes!

Anyway, Wendi was in Maryland over the weekend and stopped by House of Puddles. Buttermilk really took a shine to Wendi and they became BFF!

Buttermilk taking a shine to Wendi

Then Wendi did the same manauver that I did a few days ago trying to capture that low to the ground hound picture!

Wendi in the LTTG position

Buttermilk was wondering what the heck was going on? Look how concerned she looks! hehe

Hey, why are you laying on the ground?

Here is Marilyn out on the back deck with about 1/2 of the elders that she cares for.

Marilyn with some of the elders

Here is another shot…..

Marilyn and the elders

See that long legged guy? The bassets love to walk under him. His name is Jeeps.

I have to end with one more shot of Buttermilk. She was strictly under the impression that this visit was all about her. She clearly knows how to milk the attention!

Buttermilk milking the attention

Nice tat Wendi!

From the side of a GA dirt road, in the sweltering heat, infested with fleas, bone thin and starving, to House of Puddles. Now that’s one lucky hound!

Saturday in the Park…..

September 12th, 2009 - 8:08 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Saturday in the Park Lovers! We have a great park in Ft. Thomas and some of my dear readers have seen many pictures. I think this might be a new one. The area that is designated as the dog section! It is at the very back of the park and for some stupid reason they put it on a steep hill side.

IMG_3426

This is kind of a bad picture, but you can see all of the cars and that shrub line down the side. It is really dirty and dusty but a lot of folk love it so that is all that matters. We cannot visit the dog park because of Chaps being a bit grouchy. He would be even grouchier if Emma went by herself. So, we do our own park walk!

This is me resting with the kids while Grandma does a power walk. I had just completed mine!

IMG_3429

Then we walked back home after the kids were rested.

The vision of Emma walking Grandma will never leave my mind. Thank Dog I have this picture to remind me.
