Susan is “considerably” better than yesterday!

August 9th, 2008 - 4:04 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and update lovers: I just got off the phone with Susan’s sweet Mom
(4:30pm Saturday).

Mrs. Randolph said that Susan is considerably better than yesterday. Her brain pressures are down and that is a great thing! Her black eye is looking better and the swelling is coming down. Susan is still sleeping a lot. I am not going to call her tonight. I don’t want her even thinking about carrying on a conversation while her pressures are coming down.

Mrs. Randolph said that the first thing she asked about, when she woke up, was Toby and Daisy.

She is on track to leave the ICU in a couple more days but we will know more on Monday when the full staff gets back to work. Mrs. Randolph said it is pretty quite on the weekends.

Tonight Mrs. Randolph has the task of cleaning basset ears! Yesterday she gave Toby his allergy shot! Good job!

Also, I have been getting a fair amount of e-mails from folks wanting to send things to Susan other than cards. My dear friend Melynda has been working on compiling some information for everyone.

Since this is a public website, I do not want to put her address on this blog posting. If you want to send Susan and her Mom and Dad something just e-mail me and I will help you do that. If I know you or know of you, I will send you her address. If not, I am sure someone other than me knows you! hehehehehe

Here goes:

This is a joint update on Susan Randolph from Cat and Melynda!

According to Susan’s mom, whom we both speak to every day, the surgeons had to shave her head for the brain surgery and she also has staples. Her mom was a bit worried about how Susan is going to feel about that when she becomes more aware of her surroundings. So, some of Susan’s friends and furends are starting a Hat Brigade!

If you want to join the Hat Brigade, just send a cute hat, cap, headscarf, skull cap, doo rag, or any other pawsome head covering for Susan to proudly wear until her barootiful hair grows back in! You can send hats (or get-well cards, etc.) to Susan’s house, where Susan’s mom will be living until Susan is completely well:

Hat size medium/large. Hint: Susan loves basset crap especially when it benefits rescue!

If you would rather send a donation in Susan, Daisy and Toby’s honor instead of a hat, we know that some of Susan’s favorite charities are:

– BROOD (http://www.brood-va.org/support.htm)

– HOP (http://houseofpuddles.org/donate.htm)

– Noah’s Wish (http://www.noahswish.info/Donations.html)

– Senior HoundsAbound.(http://www.seniorhoundsabound.org/info/donate)

Several folks have emailed us and asked if they could send a restaurant or other gift certificate to help out with food while Susan’s recovering. If anyone wants to send a restaurant gift certificate to help out with a meal, we did a search on restaurants near Susan’s house and here are some of them. We suspect that Susan’s mom, who is not as familiar with Leesburg, is going to be driving her around until she feels better and her vision comes back to normal, so we are only listing chain restaurants where people could easily get gift cards to, within two miles of her house. We know Susan loves southern food but we think she loves all food–we don’t know of any particular likes or dislikes (we know she loves chocolate!). There is also a Wal~Mart, PetSmart and a Target close by if anyone wanted to send gift cards for any of those places to get goodies for home or for Toby and Daisy.

Blimpie’s Subs
McDonald’s
Pizza Hut
Popeye’s
Dunkin Donuts
Baskin-Robbins
Papa John’s
Quizno’s
Starbucks
Roy Rogers
Red, Hot & Blue (GREAT bbq)
Subway
Domino’s
Burger King
Taco Bell
International House of Pancakes (IHOP)
Ruby Tuesday
Coldstone Creamery (ice cream)
Ledo Pizza (best pizza in DC)
Panera
Bob Evans
TGI Friday’s
Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs

It really helps when you don’t have to cook!

Well, my dear friends that is all for now. I will be updating everyone tomorrow, and every day until our girl gets back in shape.

P.S. Chaps states, “This food gift card thing is a really good idea! I support this effort as Mayor, and food lover, slurp!”

UPDATE – SUSAN RANDOLPH – GOOD NEWS!

August 7th, 2008 - 1:01 pm KY Time

UPDATE – 2:20PM KY TIME

Hi everyone. I just got off the phone with Susan’s Mom and the report is fantastic! They have our girl up and walking down the hall. She was also sitting up for awhile. The surgeon said that she is doing so good that he expects to step her down to the main patient area in 3 to 4 days.

Then she will stay in that area for 3 to 4 days. She can have visitors at that point! So, it looks like she could be going home in about 6 to 8 days. I bet she will be so happy.

Susan is eating a bit of food trying to keep her strength up. She also has a black eye from the surgery and they don’t know how much hair, if any, she has left. That won’t keep our girl down! She is pushing hard to recover and get back to us.

This is a picture of our Susan while visiting the House of Puddles this summer. She is trying to comfort Hermey through a thunder storm!

Susan’s Mom said that Toby and Daisy are doing great and eating good. Her Mom sounds so sweet. I wish I could hug her.

More good news later….Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

Julian draws Rudolph for HOP

July 27th, 2008 - 11:11 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound, Julian and Rudolph Lovers:

My nephew, Julian is starting his drawing right now! Here he is!

Please, have your child join the fun and draw a HoPper! It’s fun!

As most of my readers know, Susan Randolph and I are working on another fund raiser for the HOP. Here are the rules and instructions:

Calling All Junior Pupcassos!
Help us show the world that “Senior Droolers Are Cooler”

Have a child who loves drawing–especially drawing dogs? Want to help the senior hounds of HOP and have your budding artist’s masterpiece displayed in an online charity art exhibit?

Cat and I are seeking as many kids as possible under the age of 17 to create pup-portraits of the House of Puddles bassets and donate their creations to our charity exhibit & raffle (an idea inspired by the recent artwork created by our very own Limber Lou’s kids).

Kids are free to choose the HOPper they wish to draw as well as the medium they prefer to work in (crayon, marker, paint, colored pencilsit’s entirely up to them). Each original will be displayed in our online “Barkwork” gallery, and raffle tickets will be sold for chances to win these one-of-a-kind treasures (with all proceeds going directly to House of Puddles to support the senior bassets in Marilyn’s care). Only one entry per child please.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  1. Just visit the HOP Houndie Pages at http://houseofpuddles.org/HoundiePages.htm and have your kid(s) select the HOPper they’d like to draw. Remember, if you click on the name, there are more inspirational photos to spark the imagination. They are also welcome to choose one of the sweet hounds who have gone to the Bridge; their photos and stories are included on the Rainbow Pages: http://houseofpuddles.org/rainbow.htm.
  2. Please e-mail us at barkwork@verizon.net with the name of your child, their age and which HOP pup they have chosen to draw (so we can keep track and know how many wonderful artworks to expect).
  3. If possible, please have them use standard size (8.5 x 11) paper (card stock or construction paper is ideal) since we will be scanning these treasures for our online exhibit and they need to fit atop a standard scanner.
  4. When finished, please make sure the masterwork has dried completely (if necessary) before mailing, and package it carefully. It’s best to place a clean sheet of paper on either side and sandwich the artwork between cardboard so it is not damaged or creased in transit.
  5. Be sure to include a note with each artwork indicating the artist’s name, age and address and the name of the HOP dog they’ve immortalized (please avoid writing on the back of the artwork itself since the impression and lettering can sometimes bleed through to the front–and we don’t want anything spoiling these wonderful pup-portraits!). Only one entry per child please–so we can showcase as many kids’ art as pawsible.
  6. Send to: Barkwork, 228 North St NE, Leesburg VA 20176–to arrive no later than July 25.
  7. Important note: All submissions become the property of HOP and will be raffled to benefit the rescue. Some designs may be used by Marilyn for fun notecards or other promotional purposes, and by donating the artwork you are granting permission for these uses.
  8. Join us for an online gallery opening on Friday, August 1, and see each child’s unique creation on display! All kids will receive a special Artist’s Certificate thanking them for their contribution……………………………………………………. More Later, Cat, Julian, Chaps and Emma
