June 5th, 2008 - 8:08 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and doing the right thing lovers! Emma is now a part of a glaucoma research program! I will provide more information on this very soon! The next time she has to get blood drawn some of it will go to a huge study being conducted by the University of Missouri – College of Veterinary Medicine. The Basset Hound Club of America is funding a portion of the study.

Emma is over whelmed to be a part of this study. I will have much more information on this soon. I will also be doing a fund-raiser! OMG! Emma (Early Morning Misty Air of BoBac) is so thrilled to help the researchers help our breed with this disease. This is just pawsome!

Please stay tuned. I will have tons more information on this! I am
e-mailing the researchers as I type!

Much, much, much, more later!

I am so mad that Emma had to go blind. Your website is so informative. Can you send me how to pick a reputable breeder? Thanks Regan

Hey, I love you for this. Emma can help so many hounds. I hope basset hound breeder go to CERF: http://www.vmdb.org/cerf.html

It should be a requirement for BHCA breeders.

    DO NOT BREED FOR GREED!

Brad, thanks. I love that website. I think that BHCA Basset Hound breeders should be required to cert their hound’s eyes.

We are definitely interested in a sample from your dog. I always remain hopeful! There really is no reason not to participate it’s a benefit to the future with the breed.

The form and instructions for sending samples are found by going to http://www.CanineGeneticDiseases.net, click on “Glaucoma & Lens Luxation”, and then go to SAMPLE SUBMISSION. “Sample Handling” is the instruction sheet, “Individual Dog Info” is the form to complete (as much as you are able and/or willing). Please include a pedigree copy along with the form and sample when you send it.

This research is funded by grants from the Canine Health Foundation. You can make donations to a Donor Advised Fund, and designate how your donation is to be spent. I know the Dandie club and the Bouvier club have Donor Advised Funds set up there for their breeds, and I believe the Bassets do too, but I’m not certain. The CHF website is http://www.AKCCHF.org there should be instructions there, and contact info if you have any additional questions on how best to fund the research you are interested in. We encourage people to donate to CHF rather than directly, because CHF generally matches the donations when grants are paid out, so your donation goes further than it would on its own. You might talk to Erica Werne or one of the other people there to be sure your donations go to the work you want to target.

Thanks for your interest in the research. We’re working hard to solve this one so that owners and dogs don’t have to go through what you’ve endured with Emma.

    Liz
