Have you purchased your Valentine’s day gifts yet?

February 1st, 2008 - 6:06 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and Valentine’s day gift lovers:

As many of the readers of this blog know, Devon and I are raising money for the House of Puddles this year. We have a goal of 10,000 dollars. We have a Firstgiving page. If you donate to this page, your money goes directly into the 501(c)3 account for the House of Puddles.

We have updated our page with a sweet fun Valentine’s day theme as well as a new pink dream necklace. This new necklace was introduced by Devon specifically for the House of Puddles and your Valentine’s day shopping treasure.

PLEASE NOTE: WE NEED YOUR DONATION OF 20.00 OR MORE BY 2-4-08 TO BE SHIPPED BY VALENTINE’S DAY!

IF YOU HAVE ALREADY DONATED, THANK-YOU! Guess what? You can still do us a huge favor. Do you know anyone who is shopping for Valentine’s day and would like the new necklace or a package of greeting cards from bassethoundtown? If you do, will you pass our Firstgiving link to them so they can LQQK? (It is right below)

This is great way to shop because you can tell the person you are buying for that they not only received a great gift, but 100% of the money that you spent on the gift was donated to the House of Puddles! Howl sweet is this deal? Slurp!

Tell your Valentine how special they are as well as telling the HopPers how special they are!

Here is the link to our Firstgiving page:

If you have not seen the new YouTube video I made, it is now on our FG page.

The amount that Devon and I will raise is only one third of what Marilyn will need this year.

She has just taken in a new old HoPper who had to have 19 teeth pulled! His name is Billy.

Look how cute he is! Marilyn said he is going to feel so much better.

Again, thank you for your help and past, present, and future donations!

PLEASE REMEMBER TO PASS OUR FG PAGE LINK TO AS MANY FOLKS AS YOU CAN, BASSET AND NON BASSET ALIKE! BLING IS FOR EVERYONE! ALSO THE NECKLACE CAN BE WORN AS A DOG TAG ON ANY SPECIAL HOUND’S COLLAR! DOUBLE SLURP!

The Mayor inspects the pink mitten!!!!!! He is certain, it is holding treats???? Where are the treats????? Mittens fit on hands, hands hold treats!

Mayor Chaps is very impressed with the detail of the pink mitten. He loved the pink string that stitched it together. He loved it so much he started chewing on it!
He finally stopped and posed for this picture! IMG_3472.JPG

Look, the Mayor put his winter scarf on to make the mitten feel more at home!

So you want to write a Childrens’s book! Can you give me some pointers?

January 28th, 2008 - 8:08 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and Children’s book writing lovers:

I receive about 5 e-mails a month with this question. I am writing this blog posting so I can copy it into an e-mail for my answers to those questions.
So, if you don’t give a hoot, you can skip this posting! LOL!:hoot

So you want to see your work published by a major publishing company?
This blog posting is not for you either.

I self published my book,

:tornado

Lily, a basset hound’s tail of love
.

It took me 6 years and a lot of money.:xmasval

The best advise I ever received was from my brother in law. He told me,

“What you are doing is like an investment. Never be willing to invest more than you can lose.” (man o man was he right, but hope still springs eternal!:luck)

So, how much can you lose? This is the first question you must ask yourself.

OK, you have the answer.

:News

Go to this website and buy this book,
Dan Poynter’s Self Publishing Manual.

From this book I learned most everything. This guy is fantastic and helps you every step of the way.

This will give you a great understanding if you are up to the challenge of self publishing your own book.

:luck

I poured over his advise, read the book 10 times, and highlighted almost every line.
He is the master!

The writing and designing is the easy part, at least it was for me. The hard part starts when you have to get your book to the printer.
(The extremely hard part comes later!)

For me, this part was not so bad. I had been working with a graphic designer for the past 10 years. Keep this in mind. You absolutely need a graphic designer to help you in this phase. Mine helped me during the entire process. Most good, knowledgeable, graphic designers charge about 50.00 to 90.00 dollars per hour. They will set up your book for printing. Do not wait to consult one when you are done with your masterpiece. Work with a graphic designer from the start. Tell your GD what your printer wants and do design work from there. Guess what? There is a standard size along with a standard page length! (If you hope to market to brokers).

Market to brokers? They will not touch you without bar codes and ISBN numbers. You cannot get into libraries or book stores without them! You have to apply for them and pay for them.

Don’t forget to copyright. That is a huge step you do not want to miss.

The Library of Congress is also a number and place you want your book. They don’t accept shotty work! You have to be professional. The Lily book was accepted on my first try I am proud to say. I shed a few tears with that approved number.:morgan

OK, it is time to print. You have done all of your hours of research. Printing in the USA cost 5 times the amount of printing in China for a 4 color, hard back, dust jacket book.

You choose China.:yes
Now you have to deal with China, Import, Taxes, and Shipping!:omg
SofieMaersk11.jpg

The Lily book is on it’s way from China on the Sofie Maersk!

Happy days! You are elated and cannot wait. But wait! You have to get the 5,000 books trucked from NY to your home. The Import guy asks, “Do you have a dock?”:groan A DOCK! Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! “The books are on pallets and a fork lift will be needed” Double Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
I’ve solved every other problem, this one will be no different!:sherlock

The books were trucked to Cincinnati to a storage facility that unloaded them. Then I hired moving company to go get them, break the pallets, load the cases onto their truck, and deliver them to my home!
THIS IS FUN!:tornado

Want to see the video?

:lisa2

The extremely hard part has not even started yet! Selling them!:calvin LOL!

That’s an entirely different blog posting!

So there you have it fellow book writing lovers.

With passion and money! :vd8You can do it to! Or you can send your kid to Harvard for two years! I told Chaps and Emma they are going to stay home with their MOM! I spent their college educations on my previous hounds, Lily and Chloe! Slurp!

More Later….I am working on my next book. Cat, Chaps and Emma

Cincinnati SPCA raises 90,000 this morning!

January 26th, 2008 - 1:01 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and SPCA lovers: The SPCA of Cincinnati is fantastic and our area supports it in many ways. This morning we held a telethon that raised over 90,000 dollars in several hours. I am sure it will break 100,000 when all of the pledges are counted. We are in the process of building an additional facility that includes a former church! It is so cool. Here is a link to what the homeless animals are looking forward to. This will improve adoptions immensely! (Did I mention that the concrete floors in the kennel areas will be heated?)

http://www.spcacincinnati.org/pages/default2.asp?active_page_id=143

The next big event is Saturday, April the 12th, 2008.
It is the annual FUR BALL!

Does anyone want to buy a ticket and go with me? It would be really cool to get a basset hound lover’s table! We can do it for 1,250.00!

Let me know if you are interested!

Also that day is a huge Family Pet Trade show being held at the same facility. This is a convention center size show that should be fun to attend as well.

Can you believe it? 90,000 dollars in just hours. I am so happy for our area homeless animals.
