Beautiful pink dolphin spotted….Meet Pinky!

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Pink Dolphin Lovers: I cannot believe I have not heard of this sighting, but I caught this on the Today Show this morning. I could not see the footage because I was in bed with Chaps giving him some good ole lovins. I figured I could google it, which I just did.

The reports on the Today Show said that the dolphin is an albino and the color could be from the blood showing through the translucent skin.

These are the stunning pictures of a rare pink bottlenose dolphin spotted swimming in a Louisiana lake. The dolphin is referred to as Pinky.

The mammal was pictured by local charter boat captain Erik Rue, who has been studying the dolphin since it first surfaced in Lake Calcasieu, an inland saltwater estuary, north of the Gulf of Mexico in Southwestern USA.

Since it was spotted with its pod of normal coloured dolphins last year the animal has been wowing visitors on the lake.

Capt Rue, 42, originally saw the dolphin, which also has reddish eyes, swimming with a pod of four other dolphins, with one appearing to be its mother which never left its side.

There is a species of what is called “pink dolphin” that lives in South America in the Amazon river. This sighting in Louisiana, however, is considered rare because it appears to be a bottlenose dolphin but pink ones are virtually never seen.

Marine Biologist Dagmar Ferti told ESPN that it was an albino calf and that bottlenose calves don’t have much blubber so the the blood circulating under the skin is more visible, especially if the calf had been working hard to swim. He said this sighting was only the third that he knows of in the Gulf of Mexico. There have been 13 total sightings dating back to 1962.
There is also a species of Humpback dolphin called the Indo-Pacific Humpback dolphin found mostly in Southeast Asia. Some of them have pink-colored skin because of blood vessels used for keeping the body temperature cool during exertion.

Well, that is the jest of what I found on the internet for your reading pleasure.

Back when I had my precious Lily, I used to call her my bottlenose dogfin. She always reminded me of one of those beautiful creatures.

Every time I see a picture of Lily, I think of our precious Maxine …. they certainly could have been sisters!

Harriet looks like Lily too. I had seen this pink dolphin a while back but someone told me it was a hoax. Sounds for real to me!

I’ve never seen or heard about a pink dolphin. I enjoyed seeing it and reading your post. Do Emmers and Chaps have an opinion of pink dolphins?

    OneMom –

Was Maxine extremely soft? Lily was like petting silk fur. She had the softest coat of any basset I have ever petted. My Mom called the bags under her neck, silk bags. What a nice memory!

Wow, that’s amazing! I love dolphins! I “swam” with one whilst in Mexico years ago. They let a small group of poeople in the pool with it at a time. For some reason, I was so overcome with emotion I started to cry when we had to leave! I lingered for a bit and the fellow was so sweet and let me back in–just me–for another 5 minutes so I could be with this gentle creature. Thanks, Cat, for the article–it brought back a lovely memory!

Cat – Maxine was extremely soft! Her fur was different than any other basset I have ever known. She felt more like a cat than a basset hound. She also had a “hinge” halfway down both ears …she could actually slightly bend the bottom half of each ear.

That is so interesting that Lily was soft like that as well. Maybe Lily and Maxine are hanging out at the bridge together, enjoying some warm sunshine and being beautiful.

I’ve never heard or read anything about these Dolphins, the photos are stunning. I can only imagine what they look like under water. I’ve done some scuba diving and snorkling before, underneath the surface of the water is always more vivid than any photos or movies I’ve seen.

Hey Kerry (OneMom) Wow, that is amazing because look at Lily. She had the same thing. How wonderful. I know our gals are together looking down on us, helping us believe everyday!
