FDA Confirms Probe of NUTRO Pet Food Deaths, Illnesses
Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and needing to know lovers:
I just received this very important dog food update from our friend Mary. Click the link and it will take you to the press release.
FDA Confirms Probe of NUTRO Pet Food Deaths, Illnesses
This is the food that I fed to Chaps and Emma when I first got them. Chaps became deathly ill and I almost lost him. Emma was switched off of the food just because I switched Chaps. I really had no idea what was wrong with him. About a thousand dollars later and many test run we never did figure it out. It almost had to be this awful food product.
How dare they.
Throw Nutro products in the trash.
More later……Cat, Chaps and Emma

This has been such a scary subject since the very first big recall. I can remember reading through the list of foods praying that none were what I fed my animals. I have a cat too. Anyway, in the long list of foods I spotted Science Diet on there. It wasn’t the particular Science Diet that I was feeding but it scared me. So, I switched to Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance. It was very expensive. At first I was feeding to my dogs and my foster dog. At that time I was only fostering one at a time. Then I was told by a vet and several other people that when I adopt the dogs out that the people that they get adopted to probably won’t be able to afford that food and it would be better to feed them something that was cheaper but good quality. So, after some investigating I started feeding my fosters pedigree but kept feeding my personal dogs Natural Balance. Well, the Natural Balance kept going up and up and one thing lead to another and we got another foster dog then the economy started crumbling and it just didn’t make sense for me to pay almost $50 for a 35 lb bag of dog food. So…I did some more research and decided to start feeding everybody Purina One. No, it’s not a top notch food. But I don’t remember Purina being part of any recalls. The recall was on all the expensive, supposed to be premium grade food. I got totally turned off of the expensive stuff and decided that Purina has been around longer than I’ve been alive and they weren’t recalled so I decided to go with them. Plus, I learned from the DD how to read the ingredients and their ingredients looked good. My dogs love the food and they are healthy and their fur is soft and shiny. Also, if we’re traveling I can get it at Wal-Mart and most grocery stores. It just made sense for me. Altho sometimes I feel like I’m not doing the best for my dogs and Natural Balance seems to be a really, really good food. But I’m not so sure it’s worth the price tag. So, sorry so long but that’s my story on food. Never used Nutro or anything that was recalled so I was fortunate in that my dogs have been fine. Thank doG!
Purina One is not a bad food. Gus and Charlie are eating it.
Thanks for this info Cat!

I fed that to Homer. I wonder if that’s how he got cancer?
No Joni. I’m sure he didn’t get cancer from Nutro. Please don’t blame yourself because it wasn’t your fault. Cancer is a mean thing and we don’t have much control of it. You were the best thing Homer ever had and he had the best part of his life with you. Never doubt that.
Yikes!!! So what is the best dog food??? There are soooo many on the market and with all these recall it is enough to make a person crazy….What seems to be the most popular in Bassethoundtown…..would be interesting to hear. We only want the best for our houndies…
there are many good foods on the market and they don’t have to be big $$$$ but cheap foods are just thta cheap and put together with discarded things. please buy and read a very easy read book Food Pets Die For by Ann martin. yes there are more in depth books but this is an easy read and you can take 99% to the market. i don’t agree with anything 100%. Ann has done her work this book is in it’s 4th printing and updating. even good foods are in this book. do the best you can feeding wise educate your self about what they put in animal foods and even when the lable looks good well sorry to say they can still be using crap meats and floor scrapings. education is the best bet read read and read again. talk with friends and if you dog doesn’t want to eat something most times there is something wrong with that food. mold is a biggie you some times can’t smell or see it but the dogs can. you can ask me any time about foods. i don’t have all the answers but i try hard to stay on top of this subject. and the book i have interviewed Ann and she is the real deal. they tryed to take her to court the big boys and she said please do–they didn’t, NUFF SAID.
sandy
Joni you did your best for Homer, cancer well we will mostly never know why, you gave that boy a better life and love and he didn’t pass alone he was loved and loveed big and again i will use Melba Toasts woofs. NuFF SAID
Sandy (CT) It was so funny today. While you were typing your comment to this posting I was sitting at my desk thinking, I am sure Sandy will comment on this very soon. She know so much about this topic. I hope she is reading this and then DING! I got this comment from you. It was so cool!
Sandy sent me the book and I have read it cover to cover. I used to feed Van Patton’s brand but Sandy has suggested an alternative. When Emma went down in the back I put the Chaps switch over off. He was so stress because of Emma that I would not have been able to tell if the new food worked. I can’t remember the name of it. But I will report on it ASAP.

BJ –
I know what you mean. It is so confusing. Emma is on a vet prescribed food called Rabbit and Potato by Royal Cannin. Chaps is going to start his new food soon but he was on Dick Van Patten’s allergy formula. Now his coat is falling out in clumps again. I am so sick of this.
Sandy told me that change is good with dog food. I would love to have a rotation in place.
Cat
Joni – I am sure that he did not get that from his food. He lived a long, long life. Also, my vet did a blood test on him that was normal. The poor boy just came down with cancer fast and went fast. The way it should be. He got to know a few good months and that is why he was hanging on. He knew there had to be love in the world somewhere! He found it in all of us. ((((((((((JONI))))))))))))))))

Hey Cindy – thanks for the information. Great stuff! When I was reading it I thought back to my first dog, a poodle, and what he ate. He dined on Kennel Ration. Does anyone remember that? LOL
I should eat as well as my dogs, today in Chaps name i bought 4 donuts and will feast on 2 tomorrow morning. while i am eating them– dunking them in my coffee, i will toast and cheer Chaps. YES (he told me to eat them yes he did)
oh look at you so cute with that little snackerrrrrrrrrrr poodle again Chaps made me say that. LOL
really you look so cute there not that you aren’t cute now but you are a basset women not so much poodle. Darn that Chaps i must stop writting for that boy– Emmers would never say such things.
Camp Toast – is that tooooo funny? Grandma was the poodle person. We are all at the Mercy of our Moms at that age! Thank Dog I found the light! Chaps and Emma would both agree with you! What is funny is that my Dad was a blood hound person but my Mom would not let us have one. I bet that is where I get my love of slobber, long ears, and soulful eyes! hehehe
Cat
P.S. Grandma still hates slobber!
Cat – do you remember the jingle for Kennel Ration?
I’ll get you started … “my dog’s better than your dog, my dog’s better than yours …”
OM – OMG! I do remember that. My sisters and I sang it all the time. We still do on occasion when we are with each other’s dogs.
My dog’s better cause he eats Kennel Ration, my dog’s better than yours!
