Basset hound recovering after eating 130 nails – Owner thankful hound is alive!

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and hound eating nails haters! OMG! I cannot believe that a hound would even want to eat 1 nail, much less, 130 of them. Anyway, this story has been circulating over the internet for a few days and I just thought it was too yucky to post but I finally looked at the video and it worth seeing.

VIDEO FROM THE LOCAL NEWS STATION

Ashley Saks couldn’t believe what she saw when the veterinarian brought her the X-rays. Her 2-year-old Basset Hound Roxy had ingested over 100 nails.

“I counted about 130, but I don’t know how many she threw up before she was taken, so it could’ve been more,” Saks said.

The unbelievable X-rays showed a clump of about 100 or so nails stuck at the base of Roxy’s stomach. At that point, there were already a few stragglers that made its way through her intestines.

“They put her to sleep, stuck something down her throat, and pulled them out a few at a time,” said Saks. “Because it was such a big bulk, they couldn’t just pull them out, it took over an hour to do that.”

Saks said she left the dog with a friend for the weekend while she was out of town and told her friend to make sure to lock Roxy up whenever he leaves because she doesn’t like being alone. But last Saturday he ran to the store thinking she would be OK to roam around by herself and that’s when she found the nails.

“It’s unbelievable she’s thankfully still alive,” Saks said.Saks said the nails didn’t puncture any of her internal organs.

poor poor dog…..what don’t they feed her food????? glad everything turned out all right! does she at least get into the guiness book for this????

ya know sometimes it is just better to pay for a dog sitter or a good stay away place than use a friend….i mean accidents can happen anywhere but really i think ya cut your chances with someone who does it for a living…

I agree with Lois. More stories of this kind or worse – where dog is lost or killed, happen when a “friend” takes care of someone’s dog. Go with the professionals. They know how to keep the dog safe much better than a friend.

We usually have ours board at our Vet clinic. This way if something goes wrong they are on the ball, plus some of ours have health issues. I know the friend meant well and never dreamed of such a accident. Just thank God she is well and no issues from this.

I totally agree with everyone, except if you are having me watch your hounds! LOL! I am watching my sister’s dogs and they are treated like gold. I am on the extra safe side. Plus I have Grandma and Grandpa to help me. My sister is so thankful. I wish I had a webcam to show everyone. I will have more on my blog soon…

Lois, that was a very good point. She must have been very hungry. I remember a good friend of my asking her neighbor to watch her dogs for a weekend and the neighbor forgot. The dogs were left for 3 days with nothing. My friend left them in the garage to be let out 3 times a day and fed in the home for play time. Thank Dog they were OK when she returned but the you can imagine what they looked like.

Lois is the best dog care giver I know of.

This is truly a Christmas/Thanksgiving Miracle. What a horrible experience for everyone involved.

I am glad to hear that Roxy is on the mend.
