This absolutely should be against the law….
Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and I am so mad I can’t stand it lovers: This advertisment just came across the wires from Austin Texas.
“Hi! I have 2 Beautiful Bassett hound Girls that long to have puppies of thier own.. If you live in the austin area or the surrounding areas of Texas… I will pay the stud service fee. Please call me at 512-293-7604 or email me on this site. Thanks, Karl“

Comment from Cat…..
This is so wrong on so many levels. Karl, does not even know how to spell the word basset to start with. Now Austin Texas will have at least 10 to 14 extra basset hound puppies due to the stupidity and greed of Karl. The basset rescues are bursting at the seams and this guy wants to add to the population. Karl thinks that these girls are longing to have puppies of their own. What total nonsense. I wonder why Karl can’t just say he is longing to make money off the backs of these girls, whom by the way are grossly in need of a toe nail clipping. What these girls are longing for is to be spayed. I also wonder if Karl will report his income to the IRS when he sells the puppies.
I wonder how many basset hounds are in rescues, shelters and and pounds in TX. How many are being put down as Karl tells us his girls long to have puppies. This should absolutely be against the law.
I would love to know how many basset hounds are in TX. Does TX really need this back yard breeder?
If you go to the BHCA website and look at the list of breeders in TX it is extremely long. Actually shockingly long. I see that some of the names are listed twice, like in the case of Richard and Sharon Nance.

Is your jaw dropping yet? Mine is. What is going on in TX?
More hoping for the future of the girls later….Cat, Chaps and Emma
I think I counted 25 (Fredricksen’s are listed multiple times too). While it seems like a lot, Texas covers a lot of physical territory. Also, there are several on the list who haven’t bred any litters for over 10 years.
Thanks Sandi – You would know more about the BHCA breeders than I would.
Yep, TX is big! That’s for sure. However, I think one of the breeders on that list could cover the entire state.
The BHCA TX breeders should be enough for the state without Karl.
But you can bet your bottom dollar that Karl will have an ad for puppies coming up. He is already counting his tax free money.
I feel so sorry for those girls.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR……….from both of us!
I can honestly say that TX has too many bassets. Arizona picked up 14 today from a breeder who decided to quit (I hope she doesn’t start up again). All the basset rescues are overflowing and many of us in surrounding states pitch in and take some whenever we can.
The LAST thing TX needs is more idiotic people thinking they need to breed their dogs.
I foresee more pups going into rescue about 6 months after his dogs give birth.
I agree Cat — and Texas has a lot of “ranchers” who breed whatever they have. My dad lives in Texas and so many dogs roam free and breed. It is kind of a “Texas thing” I was told — the right to roam and breed … makes me crazy. All of the Texas Rescues (and many of the other states) have more dogs than they can possibly help.
see you guys are way more level headed than i am (or maybe just warmer…i’m freezing but that’s a whole ‘nudder issue)i am fighting the urge to e-mail ol’ karl and tell him the facts of life…
problem is that he is a moron only interested is one thing $$$$ and his beautiful bassett (!) girls who must have told him they must have puppies.
my mail would be wasted on him…a 2×4 to the side of his head would be wasted on him.
maybe his beautiful bassetts (!) will end up in loving wonderful homes and then they will be BEAUTIFUL BASSET GIRLS and have incredible loving families and lives. that is my wish…
oh wait..i have one more…maybe karl will get neutered.
okay i’m going back under the blankies…where its warm.
lois
sorry i’m cranky when its cold…the winds are like 30 mph and the wind chill is like 13 degrees and my place is freezing. sometimes living near the beach is NOT a good thing.
A man that can’t even spell basset should not even have one let alone have them bred. These little hound girls do not want to have puppies, they want to be loved by a responsible owner which Karl is not.
Kip and Gang
Wow, looks like a lot of them are in and around the Houston area. The one in League City is right down the road from me! I’m so glad to hear that most haven’t bred in over 10 years but still. That’s too many. Working with Basset Buddies of Texas for a year or so really opened my eyes to the population of bassets in Texas. We sure don’t need this back yard breeder that’s for sure. The only positive thing I can see is that it looks like the girls are healthy and clean. Except for the nails that Cat brought to our attention. Lordy, lordy, give it a few years and those puppies will be looking for homes. Too sad.
Hey Cindy – Sandi said that “several” on the list have not bred in 10 years, not most. I just wanted to point that out.
Also, the Nances tell people that they only breed 1 to 2 litters a year and I know that is false. The part they left out is per female. When I was at their kennel they have about 20 females. After they sold me Emma they added another kennel building which could house about 20 or more.
So, even though some have not bred in years others are not honest about what they are breeding.
Cat
Ooooh. I was probably hoping that it was “most”.
Cindy – That was just a detail. TX is a big state but 25 breeders still seems like a lot to me. Some no longer breed but some breed more than what they disclose so, in my opinion it evens out.
If 25 BHCA breeders are having 2 litters a year (very conservatively) that is between 300 and 400 puppies a year. These are the just the folks that take the extra step and join the club and sign up for the ethical guidelines. There is actually no way to make sure they are following those guidelines. Then you have the BYB and the puppy mills who supply all of the pet stores.
I wonder what that adds to the state of TX per year. How many basset hound puppies are in the state of TX per year?
How many wind up in rescue, or worse?
Keep in mind this is one breed.
It boggles the mind….

Also, just to let you know about the double listings for people on this list. I don’t know about the others but Sharon told me that the reason her and Richard each have their own membership instead of a family membership is so they can each have a vote. They get 2 votes instead of one. They also make sure to send out e-mails to whoever buys puppies from them on how to vote. Sharon told me that she tries to make sure that people who buy puppies from her also join the club so she can control those votes. If you look at new memberships in the Tally Ho you can see who they are sponsoring. It takes two to sponsor a new member. Richard and Sharon can do that very easily.
Not everyone who buys a puppy wants to join the BHCA as you can imagine.
I had been a member for longer than her. I figured her out in short order. I don’t play dirty.
Cat
Okay, I just stumbled on this and I just want to say that I know one of those breeders. Micky Helms has been breeding dogs for decades and only breeds every once in a while. She loves her dogs and very rarely sells them. I can’t say the same for the other breeders on the list but I just wanted to defend someone I feel is unjustly lumped in with the ones who are all about the money. Micky and her husband Jimmie do it for the pure love of the dogs.
Just my two cents.
Blue –
If you take time to read the post I am not lumping anyone to any kind of breeding category. I am pointing out that TX has too many basset hound breeders. Karl, certainly does not need to add to the scores and scores of puppies that TX is producing.
There is no need to defend anyone on a list that is showing basset hound breeders in TX. This list was taken from the BHCA website.
Again, read the post in full.
The only people that are singled out on the list are the Nances of BoBac. They lied to me on multiple levels. I have proof.
