Hollow Fellow Basset Hound and Frankie Update Lovers!

A few days ago I contacted Suzanne for a pupdate on our Frankie! It is just amazing to me howl rescue folks are so dedicated. This is a perfect example of howl long it takes to get the right hound into the right home if they are one of the lucky ones. There is so much dedication, care, work, money, effort and the list of words goes on and on!

yes, see you tomorrow….

frankie is a handful, but improves a bit every day in his socialization and training…he is certainly learning the meaning of “off”, as he is a counter and table surfer…he is still a very aggressive eater, and we have gotten one of those “slow eater” dog food bowls, which seems to help, but he is always looking for food….as you know, he is (was) only 36 pounds, and needs to put on a few pounds, so we are doing our part to put some weight on him without too much at once…looks like he may have added a pound or two…he is also learning to walk on a leash better, but still has a tendency to pull as he is easily distracted….we have not had a housebreaking accident in a couple of days, take him out a lot, and think he is ok in this respect…sometimes he chases the cats, sometimes he doesn’t, (if they dont run, he doesn’t)….he loves people, loves attention, like seamus, loves couches, annoys our old lab, but she is teaching him not to, and we think he is a bright dog and once the food aggression thing dies down a bit, will make a perfect pet….

Then Suzanne replies back………..

Thank you so much for a very thorough and extremely helpful report!
I sent home a new collar and leash for Frankie, along with a MidABHR tag. Richard also was given some Inteceptor and Frontline. Let me know if you need anything.

Appreciate all you do to help the hounds!
Suzanne

Then I chime in! hehehe

Hi everyone! Cat here! I really enjoyed reading the update on Frankie. Wow, I am impressed he is doing so good coming from the environment he did! It really sounds like he is getting all of the special attention he needs!

Suzanne – KY hounds cannot praise you and your rescue enough. The Reynauds are a blessing indeed!

That Frank is one lucky hound and smart as a whip!

Have fun Frank! Glad you got out of KY!

Thanks again everyone!

Cat

Then Suzanne says….

Thank you for all of your help, too. I got the books this morning from Richard.

They are amazing people – truly love the hounds. They have adopted (and two are flunkafosters) three bassets from MidABHR. I would trust them with my bassets.

Suzanne

Then the Foster Mom checks in with her assessment! Wow, Frankie was evaluated so thoroughly!

Good morning Suzanne. Like Rich said, Frankie is a handful, but keep in mind we are generally used to dealing with older dogs, not energetic, spirited 2 year olds. Frankie is a happy boy who loves people. We continue to work on his training. Housebreaking is going well, with no mistakes for the last few days; but he is taken out frequently. (By the way, Jackie said Frankie is not amenable to being crated.)

He is still a rather aggressive eater, and we now have one of those “slow eater” food bowls for him. He will now sit when told, but “off” needs more work. While he still counter and table surfs, this too shows improvement, and he no longer jumps on the refrigerator whenever the door is opened. I believe he will demonstrate further improvement as he gains weight.

Walking on lead has improved also; but he will pull whenever his interest is peaked–he is rather easily distracted, intensely curious, and has an incredible sense of smell. Based on our walk last evening, Frankie may want to be a car chaser. We’ll see. He is also doing better with the cats, and more or less leaves them alone. However, its tough not to pursue a running cat. And he still bugs our old lab, but she is trying to break him of this habit.

Frankie has not chewed anything in the house or yard. He likes to play with the dog toys, and will readily chase and retrieve. Like Seamus, Frankie finds the couch is the best place to be.

Overall, I think Frankie will continue to improve as he gains weight and feels increasingly secure and trusting. I for one am quite surprised that he is as people oriented and companionable as he is after the way he was previously treated. Frankie seems eager to please, and is on his way to becoming a very desirable family member.

End of e-mail chain………

I just love getting pupdates about our homeless now not homeless residents. It sounds like Frankie could not be in a better place. He is so lucky he made it out of KY. He came this close to not making it.

Now he is one of the lucky ones, exploring a new world, (and counter). I know what the foster family means about that counter cruising. Here we are at the vets.

Man, that guy is spry! Just look at that haunch area!

I know you all enjoy a great pupdate. I sure hope that Frankie keeps up with us. I will make sure to keep checking…..

More winning the life lottery later….Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

Thanks to all for the Frankie update. He is such a handsome guy and we are all pulling for him.

A basset girl started at doggie daycare last week, where I’m working. She was rescued from a puppy mill and is 1 yr old. The ladies at daycare were calling her and Bailey, Mr. & Mrs. Bailey Basset. So cute. Now Bailey has a partner for his singing! (which he will do sometimes, especially if I’ working with the big dogs.)

Sounds like Frankie is well on his way to the good life. Once he figures out right from wrong he’ll be a great companion.

Thanks to EVERYONE who helped with Frankie’s rescue!

And thanks so much for the update. That made my day!

Brent and I had been talking about Frankie the other day and here is the pupdate. Thanks everyone who helped with the transport and all who prayed for him. I love happy endings and I feel one coming soon for the fella. Who wouldn’t fall in love with him. I too am amazed at how he trusts and can be social with people after his treatment. Shows who is the forgiving one:)

suzanne makes it easy to be a good foster home (ok and a foster failure as well)…she is supportive and quick to get you or i should say the basset the supplies they need.

i love fostering…for me it’s a chance to make a dog who may not gotten the best chance at a good life and help them get a second shot. i can’t donate money to a rescue…but i can open my home and my heart. i drag my fosters everywhere…if nothing else when they leave my house they are probably the most socialized dogs on the planet. i expect alot from them..and yes they expect the same from from me, so it works out in the long run.

miss lowla bean has been here since feb. & she is welcome to stay as long as she needs to. she has a wicked sense of humor & will chat you up & down about almost anything. i love her dearly..but when it is her time to move on, i will shed some tears & wish her the very best..with the understanding if she ever needs to return..the door will always be open for her…as it is for any of the,..jackson, rocky, don vito, lucy, and all the others (english setters too).

it is so good to hear about fuhgetaboutit frankie doing well…i knew he would..things happen for a reason…he made he way into the bassethound town fold & now into the real hounds of nj…he is safe. he is loved. he will do nothing but thrive.

Lois, you are a God send to rescues. Fostering is the most important role in rescue. If there are no foster homes, there is not a rescue.

    Bless you!

  10. June 22nd, 2010 | 5:10 pm

I totally agree Cindy. Foster homes are the trenches. It takes very special folks to foster.

I am so very happy to hear our Frankie is doing so good. Thank Dog for good fosters. I am afraid if i would be a foster I would probably have 100 houndies. That would be nice if I had more room and money.
Cat, that Frankie has a great set of gams.
    Thanks for the pupdate.
    We all love our Frankie!
    Hugs

Thanks for the update, Cat! I think of Frankie every day and am delighted to hear that he’s with a great foster family and doing so well. Quite honestly, he sounds just like my Biggs, even now–and he’s six years old!;-) Viva la bassetude!
