Green bean diet for basset hounds…

June 29th, 2011 - 9:09 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and green bean diet lovers…..

Have you heard about it? Have you ever put your hound on this diet? I know Marilyn at House of Puddles has had a few of her elders on this diet.

I have never had to use this diet but I heard it is very effective! Some hounds like the green beans and others don’t.

Some hounds like to eat them right off the plant! LOL

More loving this garden thief later…..Cat, Chaps and Emma

My vet suggested baby carrots and green beans for Slinky, and Slinky eats them, but she prefers a White Castle cheeseburger, and some bacon and cheese treats. I think variety is important to a Basset.

Too funny! Never plant a garden near the dog pen. I put Jethro on the green bean diet years ago. You start out by reducing their kibble by about 1/4 of a cup and replacing it with green beans. Green beans have less calories than the kibble. Mine don’t mind it because I just put about 1/4 of a cup in their kibble then I mix in a tablespoon of canned food with gravy and add a little water to make more gravy. The green beans all go down just fine! Now all of my bassets get green beans. Rugs actually used to have loose stools all the time and I actually think it’s helped to firm it up a little.

This dog obviously knows how to stay slim. He doesn’t need the green bean diet! Bassets always seem to have so much fun with their lives. And confound their slaves.

Yes, Cat, I put Leo on this diet frequently;) When he starts to get a wee “fluffy” I drop his kibble to 1/4 to 1/2 cup 2X/day and add a hefty amount of green beans to the bowl, breakfast & dinner. He only fancies the Hanover brand (why, of COURSE! spare no expense for my boys;)…I tried cooking the frozen beans and even added them just thawed out to the bowl and he leaves them all behind in a pile. So, Hanover brand it is. Within a week he will drop five pounds! It’s amazing…

Wow! I was hoping to hear from the residents about the green been diet. Thank you guys so much. Mary, do the Hanover brand have much salt in them? Or do you rinse them? I might try them for the kids.

Cat, I have tasted them from the can and they don’t taste as though they have any salt, but then, I am a salt-o-holic (must read the label to be sure, though–just like plain low fat yogurt actually has quite a bit of sugar in it, which I did not know!). I simply drain them, and a serving for Leo seems to be about a third of their large can (which is over $2 and change, up here in PA).

Bumper has been on the green bean diet and needs to go on it again. He prefers the French cut green beans if he has to have them. He really would rather have a slice of pizza or a burger! Bump has lost 10 pounds on this diet before.

Thanks Judy – Let us howl he does on his green bean diet. I am just like him. I need more green beans and less pizzas and burgers!

Hey Judy, when are we going for a burger again? hehehehe

I just feed mine the Great Value brand at Wal-Mart. I make sure I get the “no salt added” kind. Down here near Houston Texas they go on sale for 2 cans for $1 and sometimes even 3 cans for 1$. Or I’ll use an ad from another store that has their brand on sale for 3 for $1. I love the fact that I can use my ads at Wal-Mart. I’ll bet I save close to $20 every week with ads and coupons.

Anyway, since I add water to their food and a tablespoon of wet food and make a gravy with it all, it all goes down the same.

Cindy that is a good tip! My Mom and I are coupon gals. Big time!

Love the gravy Cindy. My kids are all about the gravy!

My kids won’t touch them. They are meat and potato boys. Sweet taters.

I had several of the hounds on and off green beans for years. It’s great for taking off weight. I still feed kibble but replace half of the intake of kibble with green beans. The beans fill them up without filling them out.

I have a basset who is overweight. We walk her but does not seem to be working so good but I will keep it up. I’am going to try the greenbean diet since all of you say it works well. I know some of you say you put gravy in I would like to know what kind you mix with the greenbeans an dry food? My ginger really needs to lose weight. I don’t give her treats or human food. Ginger will be three years old in march. Iwant to help her get the weight off before it causes health problems she is our sweetheart we love her so very much. Thanks for the info on the greenbeans this diet will start tomorrow!!

Teresa – I have never used the diet. I do hear it works well. I would try it w/out gravy because that is only going to add calories. If she does not like it you can water down some mashed potatoes and add as somewhat of a gravy. I have used it as “gravy”. Also, when a blog post like this falls down in the past no one really reads it again so you will not be getting anymore comments. I would google green bean diet of dogs and get A LOT more suggestions! Give Ginger a squeeze for me!
