Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and yummy treat lovers….Our Emma is on a real chicken kick.  She absolutely loves it and has never been allowed chicken due to her allergies.  Allergies – smallergices who the heck cares?  Not me.  So, I had to come up with a really yummy treat.

Emma and I had a little discussion this morning…

“hum…so you want chicken as a treat and as a meal….interesting….”

Chaps came over and seconded that emotion….(remember that song?)

I hurried off to whip up the order and frankly, they looked really good!

Here is howl I made them.

2 chicken patties with the breading scraped off.  I found a great patty in the health food section of Krogers.  It is called Applegate and their tag line is…”changing the meat we eat”.  No antibiotics, humanely raised, no nitrites or nitrates and casein free.  (Do I even want to know what casein is?)  Gawd knows but I am glad they don’t use it.  It has less salt, less fat and just all in all healthier.

10 baked lays potato chips.

1 cup of Bob Evans mashed potatoes.

1 tablespoon of no salt, no fat chicken broth.

Mix all of this together and then make into balls.

Down the hatch….

The Mayor approves as well…

it’s the chips…you know you can’t have just one!

hey a girl has to eat! & if chips & chicken & taters are doing it for her..well than so be it!..she’s still on steroids right? so that will counter any of the allergies…& if she’s eating & happy? good for her!

What a Mommie you are and how adorable the pictures of Emma and Chaps. And yes, if she likes it more power to it. The main thing is that she is eating and that is a good thing! Also our Mayor looks very pleased with the chicken balls. Bet you can’t just have one, LOL.

Hi, Cat. What are Emma’s allergic reactions to chicken like? I hope she enjoys her special treats!

Hey B&G – Well, Emma has had food allergies her entire life. It took forever to figure them out. Finally, her dermatologist figured out that Emma was allergic to the protein in food, the big one being chicken. Her allergies were presenting on the outside of her body via skin problems (mostly extreme yeast, her doctor called her a yeast factory) and on the inside of her body via UTIs. So, her doctor put her on a highly digestible prescription diet which she stayed on all of her life. It is called Royal Canin Rabbit and Potato. After getting her on this food her UTIs cleared up completely and therefore no more antibiotics. We figured all of this out about age 1.5. The outside skin stuff continued but not as bad and her doctor determined that Emma was extremely compromised do to everything in our environment – get this, including herself! Yes…dogs can be allergic to themselves. So, you can’t completely fix that but we did everything else. I cut out all dyes and perfumes from our life along with a host of other things. I never gave her a bath in shampoo. We only used warm water and baking soda.

Now that she is on steroids she can have what ever she wants to eat. They blast any allergy right out of her system. I have never in her life seen her so white.

Sorry to take so long to answer but it was not just chicken that caused Emmers problems but a host of things.

She is mad crazy for chicken now. I think it has given her a new will to live. Chaps and I have been eating our fair share as well! LOL

Should I send her and Chaps a flossy?

Ah…thanks Maureen but Emma is basically on soft food now. Plus the flossy thing is loaded with salt and we are trying to reduce all salt. She is retaining water as you know and salt is the worst thing for her. You are so sweet to suggest that. Give Slinky the extra flossy for us!

Wow, like everyone else, I could eat those balls too! Something good always comes out of something bad. I’m glad Emma is getting to eat all those foods that she loves and could never have.

I agree Kit Cat…Give her whatever she wants especially since she is on steroids which should mask any allergic reaction if not too severe. I think the chicken really has given her a new reason to rally!
