Operation firm the stool continues…

April 28th, 2013 - 5:05 pm KY Time

Howllo fellow basset hound and firm stool lovers.  I did not know I was a lover until I did not have the firm you know what!  What a hassle!

So, the good news is, Daisy Lynn does not have parasites or some kind of worm that does not show up in a fecal test.

So now we are trying a new and different type of kibble.  WOW!  Yesterday at Petsmart really was interesting.  So many dog foods!

I guess it is a crap shoot;) so to speak.  We picked the one that sounded the best but who the heck knows?

Here is Daisy Lynn with our next attempt to achieve the desired results!  That is also her new toy.

Operationfirmstool1

This morning was her first try of the new food.  We also use a bowl with the center expanded up to slow her down and hopefully prevent bloat.  It works really good.

Operationfirmstool2

Well, she seemed to like it.

Operationfirmstool3

We also selected the puppy cookie from the same line.

Operationfirmstool4

So far, no results…if you know what I mean;)

More reporting every gory detail of a young pups life later…Cat, Daisy Lynn (Chaps and Emma ATB, who never had this problem!)

Did the doc suggest something? I’m surprised he didn’t give her something to help her out. I know when you switch foods some dogs will have soft stools for a few days until their bellies get used to it. I’m sure your aware of that. We wish you much luck! You’ll figure it out.

No he did not suggest a specific food but this is the next step to see if a food change will help. He did howl ever suggest multiple tests and procdures…Imagine that? This morning was worse on the new food but I am going to give it a week. I am going to drop off a huge donation of food that Chaps and Daisy Lynn could not tolerate to the local all breed rescue today. Daisy Lynn loves to eat and she is very active so she is not sick. The stool is just so soft and it takes a lot of extra time to clean it up. Very frustrating, since she is bound and determined to go in the house still. Mind you, this is with 2 people almost constantly watching her and letting her out what seems like every five minutes. I want to find a food she likes and provides the desired results. I have done all kinds of research online and I don’t want to add anything (like rice) to firm her up because that is just a band aide. I would not mind giving her green beans but rice is just a filler. Oh, well….more paws crossed later….

    Hi, Cat!
We have had success with Annamaet food (the fish one). We also do a packet of Fortiflora (recommended by our vet)that really helps tummy/loose poop issues when they arise. Just wanted to share. Hugs to Daisy Lynn!

Sounds like she’s going to be a tough one to potty train. Some are. I got Jethro at 9 weeks and he was nearly 5 months before I got him totally potty trained. But he’s a hard headed one. Just keep with the routine. I hope you figure out the poo poo problem. If you need a good cleaner try KOE, Kennel Odor Eliminator. I love that stuff.

I know when I used Science Diet, Slinky had loose stools so I don’t recommend that brand.

I was trying to think of Fortiflora. It was recommended by a vet we used for our rescues. I actually had a box of packets at the house because most would have loose stools when I got them for various reasons. It did help.

the green beans might be actually making the probelm worse….many give them to help their dog loose weight as it can serve as fiber…just a thought.

it could be she has a slight allergy to something & it is just a matter of figuring out what it is & then once you do, avoid it & problem solved (well maybe not the housebreaking one)

might also try the food for longer than a week…some of the precious little ones (like those here as well) take a little longer for their systems to ease into food changes. delicate little beings they are as they leap from table to the floor etc & scare you to death!

good luck..know tho that once you figure it out it will be smooth sailing!

Thanks everyone for all of the great suggestions. I have started on file on food information to try next. It has only been 2 days, starting day 3 but this food does not agree with her either. I am going to keep pushing on with it like Lois said it might take longer than a week. Grandma found some information on protein and loose stool that was very interesting.

Sounds like what we are going through with darling Daisy Lynn. I really, really want to feed her healthy. I wanted her on probiotics and fish oil and anything that would help her. But for now, I must just try to figure out what her body does not like in these food bags. That link I added had alot about protein. I don’t know of any of you recall but Emma was allergic to all protein. So, that hits close to home. I actually woke up this morning thinking about protein so that link was very timely for me. Also this morning when I was feeding her I was looking at the bag and it was saying howl there were 3 high protein sources in this new food. We might be on to something here but time will tell. In the mean time….thank dawg for hot water outside to clean up with!

Again, thank you all so much for all of the help…..

Is she still on puppy food? Maybe too rich for her – I know when we had our 13 Old English Sheepdog puppies that if the older dog ate the puppy chow they had loose stools. This is just “food” for thought! Ha

Here’s hoping that the Gerber Baby’s #2 firms up soon! I tell my Mommy and Daddy that I potty Tootsie Rolls and lemonade… They don’t believe it for a minute.

Cat, I fed that food to HomerII and Pally & Giz when he was with us. Afterwards they refused to eat it. I am now using Blue Buffalo grain free and Oreo’s poops are just perfect. They have it for puppy’s, small dogs and adult dogs. They also have treats. If the poop situation doesn’t clear up why not try Blue Buffalo.
Give that little mayor a snooter kiss for me and a big hug too.
