Knock on wood – I have never had a flea problem…

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and not having a flea problem lovers…Over the past 2 decades I have had 6 bassets and I have never had fleas.  I have used the chemical liquid between the shoulder blades on several occasions but I just hate it.  Anyway, I googled a safe way to ward off fleas and came up with this concoction.  I am going to try it and in my opinion it can’t hurt.

Flea Spray

Make a pleasant smelling and effective flea repellent spray by steeping thinly sliced lemons and sprigs of rosemary overnight in near boiling water. Add a few drops of geranium essential oil. Spritz on soft furniture, bedding and even the dog to repel fleas. Treat the dog’s bed as well.

Off we go then to the store for the ingredients!

The directions were kinda spartan so I tweaked it.  I brought about 10 cups of water to a near boil and added 3 thinly sliced lemons.  I then added about 5 large springs of Rosemary.

I went to Whole Foods to get the Geranium Essential Oil.  I added about 15 drops. I was home all day so I let it steep for about 4 hours.  You would not believe howl wonderful it smelled.  Just delicious!

I used this spray bottle instead of the one in the first picture.  I let it cool over night in the fridge. The liquid was about 1/4 of when I started.

I washed the dog beds and then very lightly sprayed them, about 5 wide sprays.

Daisy Lynn was very curious…

“Smells great Mommy…”

Daisy Lynn’s new perfume.  She aspires to be a perfume magnate!

Now for the office bed…I am only doing the dogs beds to see howl Daisy Lynn does with this new refreshing scent.

She seems to really like it!

Who knows if it really works but it sure is worth a try.  I am going to spray some on her paws before a walk and then clean them off when we get home.  I like to wipe hounds down after a walk to remove dirt and grass.

But for now…sweet refreshing dreams my friends…

Sounds like I smells WONDERFUL !! We all know that the young Mayor, being the Mayor of BHT, doesn’t have that distinctive Basset Hound “odor” but I suppose it may even help with neutralizing that sort of thing too? Don’t you think??

Oh for sure Karen…It wouldl really help with that houndie odor! But…that being said, we all remember that Emma was highly allergic to everything, including herself (that is true). I would proceed very slowly spraying on the actual hound of choice. So far, Daisy Lynn has laid in all the beds and she seems to love it. Today, I am going to spray some on her princess paws pads before our walk. I will keep everyone updated on our efforts. I said it before and I will say it again I hate chemicals but I totally understand that chemicals are the main treatment for fleas and ticks. Sigh…

What a wonderful idea! I am off to Whole Foods for the oil and the rest of the ingredients tomorrow. We’ll also get the chicken breast and cheese, etc.!!!!!! Whatever Cat and Daisy and Grandma do, we want to do because we think that you are brilliant!

We live in flea and tick country here in Texas. It is just awful. I am going to try this as it looks easy and not so expensive. I actually have a HUGE rosemary bush in my front yard. So, no problem getting that.

Cat, it grows like crazy and I have to trim it about once a year. Then I knock on neighbors doors trying to find someone that may want it. I end up throwing a lot of it away. I wonder if I can find an organic herb place in town that I could sell it to? That’s an idea.

Marsie – I also used one of those Green Skillets (10”) that you see on TV info commercials. Lots of folks on the internet diss them but I have found they work really good if you season them per the directions. By heating up the chicken first with the lemon juice and Rosemary it gives the bottom of the skillet some oil from the chicken, which by the way is to die for! I made two 10” Quesadillas, sliced them in to 4ths and freeze what I don’t eat. The combination of the lemon, pepper, rosemary is sooooooo good! Also, you can you use an onion cheese instead of Havarti. It is in the cheese section and is called Cotswold! Dreamy
