Ginny Tata Phillips is a force of nature. The co-author of Dogku, Bassetku, Petku, and most recently Resku books of haiku poems about dogs and shelter rescues has a vivacious personality more akin to a cruise director or Disney tour guide than to a solitary writer. It’s hard to picture Phillips working in isolation for very long. “But then, I’m not,” she explains, pointing to the four basset hounds and one 10-year-old dachshund that inhabit her household. And this doesn’t include the rest of her menagerie of cats, birds, turtles, and fish.

In another life, Phillips owned a booming doggy daycare and boarding facility in California, work which introduced her to the rescue’ business. Her customers would drop off or leave animals they could no longer care for or didn’t want anymore. Since that time, Phillips has been keenly aware of the needs of rescue agencies. She and writing partner Diane Grindol donate a portion of the monies they receive from the sales of Resku to shelter and adoption groups. In particular, Phillips supports House of Puddles (www.houseofpuddles.org) and Senior Hounds Abound (www.seniorhoundsabound.org) because of their devotion to what else? Basset Hounds!

Other than her human family, Phillips loves her animals (maybe, especially the bassets). Her senior sweetie Charles, who is fifteen recently won runner-up in the Basset Buddies Rescue’s “Most Loveable Dog” contest. Charles’ photo brought in a whopping $126, out of the more than $1000 raised in support of Basset Rescue.

Phillips’ other passion is writing. Her ultimate goal is to produce a Dog Cookbook. But that will have to wait because bigger plans are in the offing. For her next writing project, Phillips will collaborate with author Tom Schreck, known for his Duffy Dombrowski mysteries that feature a Basset Hound as a main character. The duo’s plans for their book are top secret, although Phillips hints that rescues will feature prominently.

To purchase one of Phillips’s books, contact her for speaking engagements, or to meet this charming woman, email her at my4hounds@hotmail.com or friend her on Facebook.

From DOGKU:

The best thing about
a fire hydrant is that it’s
never occupied.

From RESKU:

Poor economy
empties pockets yet fills the
shelters; pets suffer.

If you buy a book mention HOP and Ginny will donate 2.50 from the sale to the HoPpers!

OK! I have my Hush Puppy Shoe! It is called, the PUDDLE HOPper!

March 25th, 2010 - 8:08 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and HOP Puddle Jumper Lovers! I just made up my mind and designed my Hush Puppy entry! It is called the PUDDLE HOPper! I just changed the name based upon the excellent idea of Marilyn herself! I love it!

This is the shoe I want!

IMG_6173

See that basset hound? That is a picture you can put in a basset hound ear shaped plastic frame on the outside of each boot. You can put anything in that frame and guess what? You are the designer. Not the company. OK, we all love Hush Puppy but we don’t want it all over our product! We want our own signature! YES!

IMG_6170

This boot is totally inspired by House of Puddles! We all need to jump over puddles and walk through water every day when we walk our hounds! If this Puddle HOPper is designed to my desire it will be the most comfortable shoe you will ever walk your dogs in or go to the store in. I want washable tempro foam inserts to come with every pair and more inserts to be readily available on line.

You can pick your fashion color, but the color of my choice, as you can see is
PUDDLE YELLOW!

IMG_6168

These boots would look so cute at any Waddle or Dog Show. I also think the new leggin’s that are coming back in style would look great with this boot. Let the boot be your fashion statement!

If you noticed that cute, triple stitched loop off the back is another fashion statement. Hang charms or anything you want off of it! It is time to dress up boots! My design will let you do just that! What you don’t see in my design is that you have a racing stripe up the back that is triple stitched and makes the loop. It will be in the design color you pick! I will post that picture when I submit my entry. Probably later today……

More knowing your “dogs” won’t be tired in my design later…Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

P.S. HOP over those puddles with style!

I am going to try my hand at designing a pair of shoes! Not just any shoes mind you, a hush puppy shoe!

March 25th, 2010 - 9:09 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Hush Puppy Shoe Lovers! I think that company is so cute. I love their website with all kinds of cute bassets! Personally, I think they should advertise my my blog but WHAT EV!

Anyway…I digress.

Get this! Hush Puppy has a contest going on right now that I am going to enter. Here is what it says on their Website….

romLogo

Are you an artist? Do you love shoes? Could you use some extra cash? This challenge is for YOU!

Welcome to the Hush Puppies Shoe Design Challenge!

Our famous basset hound is sniffing out entries from now until April 18, 2010 for a winning shoe design to be part of our 2011 line. Your shoe illustration could be for women or men, high, low, laced, zipped, boot, shoe or sandal, whatever your mind dreams up. Impress us with your vision and design ability and if you make the cut, we’ll post our five finalists online for a public vote for the winner!

But that’s not all…

Since we like a good show, the final five will be featured at Runway on Monroe. This fashion event on May 15, 2010 in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan will showcase their illustrations for all to see. Attendees may vote via kibble or some other doggone method while the apparel contest finalists strut their designs on a runway wearing Hush Puppies shoes. Votes from this event will be combined with the online votes to determine the shoe design winner to be announced that evening. The winner will receive $1,000, a one-on-one design summit with a Wolverine World Wide designer(s) and free Hush Puppies for a year while we produce their winning design and sell it online at hushpuppies.com next year.

You wouldn’t mind an extra $1,000 and free shoes, would you? Do you think you can make the cut? Prove it! Now get designing and get your entry to us by the April 18th deadline and let us be the judge.

Let the challenge begin!

There is no fee to enter the contest. In lieu of a registration fee, please consider making a minimum $1.00 donation to the Michigan Basset Rescue organization. Donation information is available on their website.

Please read the contest rules and submit your design with entry form to:

hpdesignashoe@wwwinc.com

or via US Mail to:

Hush Puppies 2010 Shoe Design Contest,
Attn: Tracy Fahselt,
9341 Courtland Drive,
Rockford, MI 49351

Here is the link to actual site so you can go look at it. HUSH PUPPY!

It suggests that if you enter the contest you should make a donation to MI Basset Hound Rescue. I’m down with that. I will do that but if we win, the entire 1K will be donated to HOUSE OF PUDDLES!

Please feel free to send me some design suggestions. I will be sharing my drawings very soon. I am leaning towards a snazzy comfortable walking shoe. Maybe a tri color or a red and white! LOL!

More walking in comfort later….Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

Over 200.00 bucks raised for House of Puddles in Grandpa’s name!

March 14th, 2010 - 1:01 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and donations to the HOP in Grandpas name lovers! Well, you know most everyone in this town is one of those!

It has been 2 weeks today since my dear Daddy passed away so I thought, in his honor, I would go ahead and tally the donations made to HOP in his name! It was such a wonderful way to spend a Sunday.

IMG_5963

These are all of the cards and some of the flowers. You will also see an album on the right that is filled with cards from some of our residents. I am going to showcase that a bit later. It is so cool. It is actually where I am going to store all of the cards and a few more precious memories I am collecting.

Grandpa will be so proud that 200 dollars is going to HOP in his name.

grandpa&babyemma

grandpa&chaps-2

Any time Grandpa was in my office a hound was on his lap. That’s alot of hound pounds!

We cannot thank you enough residents. This is exactly what Grandpa wished for. I will be sending Marilyn all of the money this week. Eventually, I will scatter a few of his ashing at HOP. Again, another wish that he had. It will be my honor and my pleasure to fulfill that wish.

Jake is the newest HoPper!

March 3rd, 2010 - 1:01 am KY Time
Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and new HoPper lovers! This is just in from Marilyn at HOP! Update about Jake the newest HopPer!
Marilyn states…..
“He’s a sweet old guy. Not bothered a bit by the other hounds and already used to a doggie door. I think he was still a little too stressed to eat his dinner, although maybe it was just the kibble he wasn’t interested in. He certainly had an eye on my dinner. But it won’t hurt him to miss a meal or two. He’s at least 10 lbs overweight. I definitely see green beans in his future. He’s sticking pretty close to my side so far. His vet records go all the way back to puppyhood, birthday 7/1998, with the same owner all that time. What an upheaval has life has taken.

image

He seems to like to snuggle with other hounds. He just helped himself to the bed Bessie was on, and doesn’t quite fit.

More loving Jake later! I think his owner died and Marilyn took himz in. Himz seems like he fits right in. Poor boy.

!!!!!THE RULES/THE FINE PRINT!!!!

As a volunteer transport coordinator, I am dependent on what the senders tell me about our passengers’ temperaments. The very nature of rescue transport creates some risk for those who participate in it; even a good-natured dog may find it stressful to be passed from stranger to stranger and cooped up with unfamiliar dogs, and in consequence may act in uncharacteristic ways. Neither I nor anyone associated with this transport can accept liability for any accidents or incidents that may occur during the transport.

If you wish to adopt a dog you have driven you must go through regular channels (the receiving rescue). No dog leaves this transport.

Please do NOT bring your own personal pets on this transport. This can create a number of potential risks. It is also advised not to bring small children along on transports.

Overnighters: Please take appropriate precautions when over nighting dogs. I always recommend keeping your overnight guests segregated from your own animals for many reasons. We only know what we’ve been told about the passengers on this transport and as such, cannot make any guaranties.

House of Puddles gets hit hard in Fredricksburg Maryland!

February 6th, 2010 - 7:07 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Snowpocalpyse lovers… I am not sure many of my readers are one of those but like it or not it is upon us. The House of Puddles has been hit hard. At noon today Marilyn had 23” and it was still snowing.

This was a picture she took this morning…She called it “Officially snowed in!”

201002060012

Oh my! Now that is some snow! I had to LOL at this U-Turn picture!

201002060001

It looks like a few brave souls ventured out!

Then Marilyn got the pavers shoveled off much to Buttermilks delight!

201002060011

Here is Coltrain playing in the snow. This is just priceless….

I bet the belly region is chilly!

I had to LOL I was belly aching about our snow! Coltrain is my new hero!
