Emma and Chaps walk for breast cancer awareness….

October 11th, 2009 - 7:07 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Breast Cancer Awareness Lovers! Today, Emma, Chaps, Grandma and I took a walk in support of others walking for breast cancer awareness. There were many walks going on today, but we did our own. We were not fundraising, but raising awareness about breast cancer in canines and humans. Can you see that little stone that says, “Believe”? We just stumbled upon this picturesque site!

IMG_3842

Over the years of rescuing hounds we have run across many girls that were bred to death. This is a girl we did fundraise for a few years ago. She was rescued from a puppy mill where she was the breeding bit(h.

She was rescued. This picture shows her tumors.

Emma supports all Humans and Canines alike. She does her best to get the word out!

Here is our girl leading the way on our walk!

She was on a mission! After an hour we wanted to turn around and she was having none of it! Just look at that back leg! This is Emma putting her paw down! She was holding fast. Look how strong she is! We are so proud of her!

Then, she tuckered out about 10 minutes later…. LOL

Pink bandanna in place and her message very clear! Emma leads the way in awareness. Girls are girls where ever we tread this earth. We support all human and canine girls alike.

P.S. I forgot to show how Chaps supported the cause today!

There are buffets, and then there is the “buffet”, by Lois Lema, guest blogger!

October 11th, 2009 - 6:06 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Rottie Lovers:

Welcome to our own Lois Lema, resident of basset hound town. Lois was recounting this story to me and I asked her to please be a guest blogger and tell us all this amazing story. I know you will enjoy it as much as I do.

Now, resident, Lois Lema……

this story has a few sections….bear with me.

10 years ago a college student named jack was dating a lovely girl…whose name is long forgotten. together they bought a big, beautiful rottie puppy named brad. the puppy ate the walls of their apartment . they got “asked” to leave. jack moved home with bradley. eventually jack moved out. bradley did not..ruthann, 60 yr old single mom never a dog owner now had a rottie.

Ruthann and Bradley
brad grew. and then grew some more…now about 140 pounds of the biggest most gentle rottie you ever met…he smiled, and his “nubbin” of a tail wagged his whole body. he never hurt anyone or anything…his only fault was an “attraction” for young yellow labs and golden retriever males. kids climbed all over him. puppies too. if you sat on the ground, he sat on you….he was brad…kind of like “norm” from cheers.

buster and brad were the bestest of friends…kind of like the odd couple. this huge rottie and the 43 lb basset. they sat next to each other at the park and followed each other around and greeted each other like they had been apart for decades. it was a strong bond…buster actually met brad before he met his brother cooper. no one was allowed to bother brad…especially once brad became ill,,,buster had his back.
IMG_2668

when it got cold…buster could frequently be seen resting his butt on brad’s legs…to keep it warm. the last day brad was at the park…buster assumed his usual position in front of brad (forming a “T”)…this time…brad gently laid his massive head on buster’s back and kept it there for a good 5 minutes. and buster stood rock solid. it was a special moment…neither moved…something neither had ever done before.

brad was never sick…hurt his knee once …a couple of years back (chasing those young males) vet recommend surgery to improve his quality of life…(hello…he spent his days lounging on the sofa watching soaps…only missing bon bons…trust me his quality of life was just fine!)…until memorial day weekend this spring. he had just been diagnosed with arthritis, and then came a stroke, or something that left him unable to walk.

and of course…his mom was away….for the first time in 9 years. so i carried him…all 140 pounds. in and out…and cared for him like a baby until she came home…i worried he was dying. BUT he wasn’t. we got him to physical therapy…and he thrived. who would have thought?! brad…in a pool…swimming…and then with cabanna girls…getting massaged, and hot/cold treatments…acupuncture….he thrived…

Beautiful Buster

and then pneumonia. and mega-esophogus. and too mnay pills. and he stopped eating…and all summer we fought to get him to eat…his mom and i, and the vet’s and his beloved cabanna girls. it looked like the buffet table…i would go in and spread everything out and tempt him with everything i could to try to get him to just eat a few bites of food…anything. and he lost weight…40 pounds.

he rallied but then about a month ago the damned pneumonia came back. his mom and i carried him to the car and then the vet. we kept a vigil. he rallied on a sunday night…again we spread out the buffet..chicken and gravy, mashed potatoes, pasta, roast beef, turkey, meatballs, ham…you name it it was there…every other sick animal in the place was screaming for some…everyone but brad.

by tuesday…the decision had been made…it was time…. that afternoon brad’s family gathered around him…his vet’s, jack, his sister, his mom and me and he slipped gently away. i whispered “godspeed bb…enjoy the buffet”…through my tears.

now…fast forward a month someone had shared with brad’s mom the story of the rainbow bridge. over the course of the summer i had told her the basset version of the “grand buffet” story…something that i think is so healing. i am now planning a trip up to new hampshire for a few days…and a side trip to vermont as well..to include a run to the dog chapel and dog mountain.

LLtrip

beauty walk

Buffet1

brad’s mom operates a day care center…each year i bring in stephen huneck’s (he owns the chapel & dog mountain) “sally goes to the vet” and read it to the kids and the we bandage all of our collective stuffed animals.

she is familiar with that book and a little about the chapel because of that. i told her i would post things for brad on the wall for her if she wanted.

anyway…i called ahead and got a dog chapel book and rottie angel put aside. last week i arrived up at dog mountain and met with stephen and asked him to sign a book for ruthann. i asked for it to say that i know he is enjoying the buffet.

Stephen Huneck B&W

stephen asked what i meant by that. we stepped out on the porch of the gallery and chatted for a good 15 minutes…i explained the whole “buffet process.” rainbow bridge is a nice thing the buffet is a great thing…it is personal, and while sad there is humor, and joy, and hope. and that there is connection. i said i don’t know where it comes from (honestly i am oblivious to such things) but it always makes me smile and cry. i said it’s a little rowdy, maybe some table dancing, some chaos because bassets do nothing halfway.

img_0560

i explained the white boxes, and the friends, and playing, the clouds, binoculars and all i could recall. and i cried, and laughed. and he teared…and laughed. and we stood outside..alone. and it was special.

his next book will deal with what happens when dogs die…and where they go…and the basset buffet will be included in it. and that’s pretty damn cool. he thanked me for sharing it with him because he had never heard anything like it before…

he asked if brad was a basset…i said no…he was a giant rottie..but he was loved by all the bassets at our dog park…especially buster…who at the mention of brad’s name..let out one of his arrooo’s. we both shivered from that. he mentioned brad might make a cameo.

all in all a special visit…as it always is at dog mountain & the chapel.

lois lema & buster brown (who has sat by me the entire time i worked on this) & mr cooper who didn’t…..

End of Lois and her guest blogging…..

Hopefully, more later….Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

We had so much fun this weekend at the Union Terminal!

October 11th, 2009 - 5:05 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Weekend Lovers! We had such a good time this weekend. It was Grandma’s birthday and we spent it with Julian! As usual, it’s a non stop party when we have our boy over! I am pretty sure I have blogged about this before, but Cincinnati has the coolest train station I have ever seen. It is called Union Terminal.

Union-Terminal_HR

I could probably do an entire sub blog category on this magnificant structure. It is one of my favorites places to go in Cincinnati. Several museums are housed in the dome delight and there is also an Omni Max. You can go and spend hundreds of dollars or go and spend a few dollars and have just as much fun!

OK! here is the coolest thing. I have been to Union Terminal hundreds of times but did not know the secret of the water fountains!

IMG_3820

See that water fountain tucked in the corner? See that sheet of paper hanging over it? Here is what it says…..Click on the picture to read it.

(Qlso, there just happens to be an ice cream parlor in the picture!) That will loom large later…..

IMG_3817

Here is the size of the dome….

union_terminal

You can see the ice cream parlor on the left hand side with that glowing neon light. The other water fountain is on the opposite side.

Julian and Grandma made their way across the rotunda. I actually lost sight of them. I estimated that they should have reached the other side and said, “Anyone for ice cream?” And I heard a big burst of laughter. Julian said, “Chocolate chip cookie doe please!”, and I could hear Grandma laughing. I decided to make another sound, which I think you might guess…

“Ahroooooooooooooooooo……………..!”

Julian and Grandma then started barking as well. I think we know how to make the most of the whisper gallery!

Then to top it off I whispered, “Happy Birthday Grandma!” YES!

It might be my imagination, but our ice cream tasted a bit better than most scoops as we sat in the art deco parlor. This parlor was designed by the famous Rookwood Pottery Company and the detail is a delectable delight all on it’s own.

Happy Birthday Grandma!

Look at this picture I just found of the Mayor!

October 9th, 2009 - 12:12 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Hounds after bath lovers: Our dear friend Cindy and fellow BHT resident is giving baths to her hounds Jethro, Rugby, Ozzie and Harriet this weekend. Kudos to you. This is one of my most dreaded tasks to do. I think I would actually enjoy it if I had a ramp and an elevated tub set up. If I win the lottery tomorrow I am going to make my dreams come true!

Cindy you have to take pictures so we can see your set up. I put my kids in a concrete mixing pan which is situated over the drain in the basement, right under a facet with hot and cold water.

Here is a picture of the Mayor, with his feelings hurt, right after I got him out of the tub. He is actually about 5 pounds heaver from all of the water soaked into his fur. It took me five towels and over an hour to dry him.

October 8th, 2009 - 12:12 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Top 25 lovers? I really have no idea what this means, but maybe someone reading this can inform us.

This was on the BHCA website….

Last night the BHCA first Top 25 Competition was held in Shelton, Washington. Below is a photo of the winners.

top25

The top 25 Winner was Ch. Showtime’s Shock and Awe, ROM (center on table), with three “Judge’s Selection dogs also receiving awards (from left, Ch. Topsfiled-Sanchu Pop Art O’Bridi, Ch. Splash’s the Professor, and Ch. Castlehill’s Art Deco, ROM).

Basset Hound Club of America National Specialty Show Best in Futurity Judging

October 8th, 2009 - 12:12 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and wanting to see some hounds run around the ring lovers!

This is about a 20 minute video that goes through about 8 hounds I think. OMG, I am pretty sure Ch Sasquatch Double Exposure has the longest ears I have ever seen! OMG! I am pretty sure he is the 3rd hound. Just amazing.

The 4th hound is called Fascination of BoBac. That is Sharon Nance, the one who bred Emma.

The 5th hound cracks me up. Topsfield-Sanchu Google of Cloverhill. Gosh, you just gotta love a basset hound. Look at that tail go!

Look how pretty Keepsake’s Classic Free Spirt is, hound number 7. I love this hound. I want this hound. She is such a pretty girl! Look at that face!

Before this video ends I am going to pick my favorites and see how my judging skills are!

This is fun!

OK, I am a bit confused by the end line up. I counted 8 hounds but I don’t recall seeing them all. Anyway I am going to go by the end line up and make my top three picks.

Third place: The hound that is second to the end, in front of Sharon Nance.

Second place: Mr. Long ears,

First place: Keepsakes Classic Free Spirit. The hound I want.

My number 1 pick

The music is kind of funny with the hounds marching around.

OK – My top pick looks like number 2.

ND woman’s 7-foot-long dog could be record holder

October 8th, 2009 - 10:10 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and fun fact lovers! Wow, this is a morning for the bizarre and unusual!!!

World's tallest dog?

Photo credit: AP | In this Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009 photo, Boomer, a 180-pound Landseer Newfoundland dog, drinks water from the kitchen sink at Caryn Weber’s home south of Casselton, N.D.

Start of article:

Boomer may be a buster: Measuring 3 feet tall at the shoulders and 7 feet long from nose to destructive wagging tail, his owner thinks she may have the world’s tallest living dog.

Caryn Weber says her 3-year-old Landseer Newfoundland keeps all four paws on the floor when he drinks from the kitchen faucet in her family’s farm house in eastern North Dakota.

Boomer can stare into a car window eye to eye with a driver. A 20-pound bag of dry dog food lasts a couple of weeks.

Weber says the fluffy black and white dog “comes into the house and his tail is so high everything gets knocked around.”

Weber plans to send Boomer’s measurements to Guinness World Records. The previous record holder was a nearly 4-foot-tall Great Dane that died this summer.

End of article…

Well, well, well, I know a certain someone named Romeo that might just be in the running when he is full grown??? Let’s just wait and see, shall we?

Howl smart is your right foot?

October 8th, 2009 - 10:10 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and bored at work lovers!

Have you heard about this one?

smart foot
HOWL SMART IS YOUR RIGHT FOOT?

This is hysterical.
You have to try this.
It is absolutely true.
I guess there are some things that the brain cannot handle.

HOWL SMART IS YOUR RIGHT FOOT?

You have to try this please, it takes 2 seconds.
I could not believe this! It is from an orthopaedic surgeon…………
This will confuse your mind and you will keep trying over and over again to see if you can outsmart your foot, but, you can’t.
It is pre-programmed in your brain!

1. While sitting at your desk in front of your computer, lift
Your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number ‘6’ in the air
With your right hand. Your foot will change direction.

I told you so! And there’s nothing you can do about it!
You and I both know how stupid it is, but before the
Day is done you are going to try it again, if you’ve not already done so.

Send it to your friends to frustrate them too !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More bored a work blogs later…..Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

Howling feels good!

October 7th, 2009 - 7:07 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Howling Feels Good Lovers! I just received a cute comment on a YouTube video I did back in 2006. This video has received 14,037 views! OMG! Howl cool is that? The commenter said,

“*Psst* Make sure you have them under contract… Don’t let them go on American Idol! They won’t even thank you for discovering them. They’ll thank Simon!

*grins*”

Grins indeed! That is Colby Chaps on the left and his cousins to the right.

More loving beautiful music later….Cat, Chaps and Emma
