Artist Stephen Huneci Dies January 8th

January 8th, 2010 - 5:05 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Stephen Huneci Lovers. We are certainly in that group and the news of this famous, inspirational artist taking his own life has rocked us to our core.

Dogs_Can_Heal_a_broken_heart

Via a newsletter alert from his wife the sad news was learned. Lois, basset hound town resident has visited the gallery and dog chapel many times and has even done a guest blog on her experiences. I will put a few links at the bottom.

Stephen’s wife writes,

“It is with great sadness that I share with you the news of the death of my Husband , Stephen Huneck, Thursday January 8th. Tragically Stephen took his own life. Stephen had been despondent for some time now and was being treated for depression.

Like many Americans we had been adversely affected by the economic downturn. Stephen feared losing Dog Mountain and our home.

Then on Tuesday we had to lay off most of our employees. This hurt Stephen deeply. He cared about them and felt responsible for their welfare. I could see how devastated he felt and tried to reassure him that the most important thing to me was that we were together. I told him how much I loved him, that he had accomplished so much in his life he should feel proud not ashamed.

Steve_and_Artie_copy

I said how, I was constantly being told by visitors to Dog Mountain how much they loved his artwork. They also told me how meaningful the Dog Chapel was to them and how grateful they are that Stephen had created it.

Stephen and I discussed his feelings of despair and he said he would be seeing his psychiatrist the next day and would talk it over with her. He seemed to be looking forward to his session. He got up early Thursday morning to go see her. Stephen drove to the doctor’s parking lot and while parked in his car, shot himself in the head.

I wished I could of reached him some how. Stephen gave so much love and joy to the world through his warmth and openness as a person and a great artist. I hope he will be remembered as that joyous soul.
HUNECK

One the last page of the “Dog Chapel” book Stephen wrote “you too can build a chapel, in a place that’s always open in your heart”

Please remember Stephen in your hearts.

Yours truly,

Gwen Huneck”

The shock of this news is almost too much to take in. This family built a sanctuary for all of us to feel better about ourselves and the memories of our beloved pets.

May your soul still grace the perfect place you built in Vermont. (((((Stephen)))))

Need some picture frame advise!

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Picture Frame Advise Lovers…..

OK, here goes…..

I went to TJ Maxx yesterday with my Mom looking for a warm, pawsome looking black hat for the season. Of course, I could not find one but I found this.

A really cool pink, wrought iron frame. I just adore wrought iron and I love pink so I grabbed it right up. The best part…..4.50!

IMG_5182

As I was admiring my pink delight, Grandma wandered over and said, “Emma would look beautiful in that frame!” I totally agreed! It was the only one on the sale table so I tucked it into my basket. Grandma calls finds like these, “Secret Treasures”!

IMG_5180

You can put a picture in the manner of the first photo or a picture like this….

So dear reader….

What picture should I put in the secret treasure frame?

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound Lovers and finding odd things on the internet lovers…

OK, I was on taking a stroll on line and ran across this blog. It is called

Essays, Research Papers, Term Papers, Dissertations, Thesis Papers at AdvancedWriters.com

No need to link to it because it has nothing to do with basset hounds except for this person’s current blog posting which I will share with you. Why you ask? Because I want you to be as confused as I am with this “Advanced Writer”.

Here goes the blog posting……

How to Write a Persuasive Essay

There are basic steps to help a student to write a good persuasive essay that also applies to all writing. How does a student prepare? You’ll need an idea and a purpose for writing the paper. The idea should be as specific as possible, for example, instead of writing about dog breeding, write about breeding basset hound dogs. The purpose in this case, is to persuade the reader to raise this particular breed of dog. “Breeding basset hound dogs is a good idea.”

In a persuasive essay, you are making a statement (idea) and giving points and facts to gain your readers agreement with your statement. You can appeal to their reason or to their emotion or ethics and sometimes you appeal to all three areas. You present coherent supporting statements, such as, “You can make great money breeding basset hounds. Last year they outsold all other breeds of dogs, and usually for $100.00 more per dog.” Another persuasive example might use a comparison, such as, “The basset hound dog breed have large litters of puppies, unlike the Chihuahua dog breed that only have 1 or 2 pups in their litters.” The two previous statements might appeal to the reader’s reason.

Another supporting statement might appeal to the reader’s emotions, such as, “The Basset Hounds make great hunters and even better family pets with their devotion and determinedness”. Tip: you do not need to appeal to all three, reason, emotions and ethics, but it’s often more persuasive. An example of an appeal to the reader’s ethics might go like this, “Basset Hounds are one of few breeds that have natural desirable characteristics without having to inbreed them. If you want to show Basset hound dogs, you will not be required to crop their tails, ears, or other appendages just to make them show worthy.”

Finally, the guidelines for any paper, you want to conclude your persuasive essay paper. This is a final statement, summarizing your idea and persuasion. “In conclusion, if you breed the basset hound dog, you will not only receive love and joy from your dogs, admiration from others, but financial rewards as well.”

End of blog posting……

How in the world does this person define ethics? Not inbreeding a dog?
HUH? Say what?

Howl can I ever thank the Mayor enough?

January 6th, 2010 - 9:09 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and saving your new lap top lovers! As many of my readers know I have a new lap top and BTW, I am so in love with it. I get to carry it around the house and play with it. Last night I took it into my TV area. Oh, I was so fancy! Then I almost lost it………

I was going to move my lap top back to the office to charge it back up and this is what happened.

I could not photograph this, so I did a diagram. If you have a printer, you might want to print it out for a total view of the events. If not, click on the picture for a larger view.

IMG_5167

All I can say is that having Chaps laying in the area he was saved the day. I also must let you know, he NEVER, lays there. Was it a hound intervention to save me lots of money? I cannot tell you howl happy I am that his soft pillow haunch was there to catch my lap top.

I certainly learned a lesson. I will never let this lap top hit my hound boy again.

This is not a picture of the event but taken that same day. I was so loving my boy. Himz and I were watching each other work!

See that haunch?

Abbey and Shakespeare visit Mount Vernon

January 5th, 2010 - 12:12 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Mount Vernon Lovers: I ran across this blog posting on a photography site called, Paw Prints Photography

I love the pictures and the folks that run this business are in VA. After viewing Abbey and Shakespeare I now really want to go to Mount Vernon, the house where George Washington lived. It looks totally pawsome and fun. I am going to certainly put this place on my list for future travel with Chaps and Emma .

The photo blog states,

“Interestingly enough, we found historical reference that Lafayette brought Basset Hounds to George Washington as a gift. Mount Vernon allows dogs and is a great place to visit with your best friends. (Leashes are required, and Abbey and Shakespeare were on leash the whole time – any images sans leashes were removed in Photoshop”
