Any port in a storm…

June 10th, 2015 - 7:07 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and, any port in a storm lovers…LOL! I say that because a nurse I used to work with in the recovery room would hold babies after they had tubes put in their ears and they would cling to her neck.  She would cuddle them and say that phrase over and over again.  It was so cute.

So I was saying that to Bumper and Abby last weekend when I went over to cuddle them and provide a potty break.

“Any port in a storm…”

Their Mommy Judy was spending the day in Louisville watching her son Kevin receive his MBA!  YES!

“Any port in a storm…”

After the storm passed the main question was…

“Hey blondie where are my treats?”

Momma Judy has 5 kids and all them have their MBA – one is even going for a second MBA!  Congrats Judy and hubby Rick.  Ya done great raising up your family!

BAGS or BUST!

June 7th, 2015 - 7:07 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and BAGS or BUST lovers…Today Grandma and I did a leg of transport for 2 elder hounds heading from Knoxville TN to BAGS in North East OH.

We took off this morning! I am all ready with my BAGS T-shirt on!

Love it when a plan comes together!

EF1

The elders were coming from Knoxville and we met them at the La Grange, KY Crackle Barrel…

EF2

That is Emma on the left.  She is 11 and is heartworm positive.  Her traveling companion is Flash.  He is 10.  Both of these kids were owner relinquished from different families.

This is my contact Jamie who was very sweet and does lots and lots of transports.  As you can see the elders really hit it off.  They seem to immediately bond with each other.

EF3

Look howl pretty Emma is!  She was a darling.  A perfect girl in this world…

EmmatoBAGS

Flash really took a shine to herz!

EF4

He had the most melodic howl you have ever heard!  What a precious boy!

Then it was off to meet our next road warrior…

Grandma and I were thrilled to help these hounds make their way to grow older together.  It was a pleasure and an honor!

EF5

Kristi was waiting at the exchange location!

EF6

Potty time and drinks of water and one leg closer to a new home called BAGS.

Spicy south of the boarder drunken corn on the cob – the star of any picnic!

May 24th, 2015 - 8:08 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and drunk corn on the cob lovers!  LOL!  I thought I would share this rather lengthy and picture heavy post with the residents.  I always try to find ways to make delicious dishes that I can freeze or make ahead of time.

Today Grandma and I decided to have our Memorial Day Picnic. We have been working so hard in our yard and it was a perfect day to enjoy it.

What is better than corn on the cob to go with a picnic?  Well, maybe a glass of wine;)

This corn had 2 glasses!

MD15:1

The corn is ready to indulge!  Add lots of butter to a hot skillet.

MD15:3

Then add onions.  I keep a container of caramelized onions on hand at all times.  It takes forever to get them the way I like them so make a batch to add to lots of stuff, (you can freeze them as well).

MD15:2

Assemble your other treasures – Yum! OK – here is a tasty tip.  See that hot sauce? No salt!  Unheard of and it is delicious.  You can order it online.  Tejas Tears.  Don’t you just love the label?  Makes me smile every time I open the fridge.

My Krogers has fresh salsa made up in the veggie sections of the store. That is about a 1/2 cup or more.

MD15:4

In to the frying pan my little sweet and golden lovelies!

MD:155

Cover and steam.  I kept these on simmering/steaming heat for about an hour.  About 1/2 way into it I added another glass of Chardonnay.

Who uses water?  That is so last summer!  LOL

MD15:6

While the corn was getting drunker and drunker I broiled some onion buns with a slice of Havarti on each side.  Extra cheese please!

Again, I like to do everything as much as possible in advance.  You can do all of this the day before or weeks before if you choose to freeze it.  Pull it out when it is time to eat and just heat up with the zap of a microwave.

MD15:7

Ta da!  The buttery beauty, complete with dog corn holders!  You can’t really see it in this picture but I poured the butter chardonnay sauce all over it.  Your mouth will thank you…

MD15:8

No picnic would be complete without Daisy napkins and the Mayor!  She is such a doll.

MD15:9

Grandma and I had hamburgers grilled on our tiny George Foreman.  Come on!  That thing is amazing.  French fries, deviled eggs, coleslaw and to top it off drunken corn on the cob.  Washed all down with a glass of Chard – heck, have a glass and a half when you are picnicking in your own back yard!

More…there’s no place like home later…Love, Cat, Daisy Lynn (Chaps and Emma ATB eating rainbow corn on the cob!)

News of the weird…

May 23rd, 2015 - 12:12 pm KY Time

Howllow Fellow Basset Hound and News of the weird lovers…

Get a load of this!

IS IT WEIRD OR WONDERFUL?

DogSlobber

Chuck Shepherd, editor of “News of the Weird,” has been collecting peculiar stories for almost 20 years.

Proof that true stories are weirder than made-up stories.

I have been around basset drool for approximately 2 decades…I do feel healthy!

Here we have an action shot!  LOL

Goodrool

WEIRD OR WONDERFUL? – Maybe dogs not only make up happy but also healthy!

The upcoming study will put match people between the ages of 50 and 60 with dogs and then measure to see if their immune response are affected by the presence of the dog over 12 weeks, the researchers told ABC News today.

In theory the dog’s microbiome would beneficially influence the human’s microbiome, which would affect the human’s immune system response.

Dr. Charles Raison, a professor of psychiatry at University of Arizona’s College of Medicine and lead researcher, said the dog could potentially work almost as a “probiotic” and help build healthy bacteria colonies in the human owner.

“We’re not really individuals, we’re sort of like communities [with bacteria],” Raison told ABC News. “These bacteria can powerfully impact brains and [immune health.]”

Raison said allergy and immunologist researchers have been searching for why certain immune diseases, including allergies and asthma, have increased in the Western world. One theory has been that human microbiomes have been depleted by less exposure to certain harmless bacteria. A dog could in theory help restore that balance.

“If the dogs and human owners look similar microbiota-wise … then it means dogs are basically having probiotic-enhancing microbiota of human owners,” Raison said.

The study is just the first step to investigating how dogs and their bacteria can affect immune health, he said, noting that he next wants to do another study with children.

Dr. Donna Hummell, a clinical director of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology at Vanderbilt University, told ABC News that earlier studies found that infants born to a household with dogs had lower rates of allergies and asthma and she’s interested to see if this study can shed light on what is happening on a bacterial level.

“Dogs spread their bacteria around more than cats do, particularly because dogs like to lick things and lick people and lick themselves in the process,” said Hummell, who is not involved with this study. She noted it could explain “what is happening with bacteria when [people are] living with an animal.”

Researchers have found positive news that introducing healthy bacteria in the gastrointestinal system seems to help other inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases such as Crohn’s disease but that the research on bacteria’s influence on our immune system is new, Hummell said.

“Influence of bacteria on immune system on the individual [we’re] just beginning to dissect and sort out,” she said.

End…

More, some saying weird but I say wonderful later…Love Cat, Daisy Lynn, (Chaps and Emma ATB thinking that is why bassets are best!;)
