EMMA’S SONG – A POEM BY KEN JOHNSON

July 1st, 2008 - 6:06 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and Emma Lovers:

My Dear Friend and bassethoundtown.com poet laureate, Ken Johnson, wrote this poem for Emma back in March, right after she lost sight in her good eye. It has taken me this long to post it. I wanted to do Ken’s poem justice by adding pictures and it was just too hard until now. Ken, you are so sweet and I love you very much. I know every one of my readers will enjoy this touching tribute to our Emma.

EMMA’S SONG
A POEM WRITTEN BY KEN JOHNSON – MARCH, 2008

THOUGH THE GIFT OF SIGHT HAS COME AND GONE,

MY HEART IS FULL OF LOVE, AND THAT GIFT IS STRONG

THERE WERE MANY THINGS THAT I USED TO SEE

BUT THEY ARE NOT WHAT MATTERS TO ME

IT’S MY MOM’S SWEET VOICE, HER GENTLE TOUCH

THAT MAKES IT ALRIGHT, I LOVE HER SO MUCH

NOW I SEE WITH HEART AND MY GOOD SENSE OF SMELL

THE SOUNDS THAT I HEAR ARE FAMILIAR AS WELL

THE THINGS THAT I LOVE HAVE NOT GONE AWAY

A NAP IN THE SUN ON A WARM SUMMER’S DAY

THE TASTE OF A TREAT IS EVER SO SWEET

AND CURLING UP AT MY GRANDMA’S FEET.

THOUGH LIFE IS NOW DIFFERENT IT IS STILL GOOD TO SEE,
FOR I STILL HAVE WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO ME

I feel so sorry for Emma tonight

Howllo Fellow Hound and Emmers Lovers:

Having a blind hound is so sad. I do not let Emma know I feel this way. However, I see how she struggles. Prior to to going blind she would bound down the hall way to check on the barking dogs in the neighborhood. Now she bumps down and seems frustrated. She is really aging as well. Today it seemed liked she had a headache. Her third eyelid was up on her prosthetic eye.

It is a struggle for humans and hounds alike when we face a disability. We wish the best for our children and when they struggle we struggle.

Emma is very young and was so active. Now she is in the dark. Believe me, I know that she is lucky to be with me.

I feel she wants me to tell her story. I see her trying to look at me…..

Guess what Chaps’ did this morning?

May 18th, 2008 - 7:07 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and clever hound lovers: I was watching Chaps and Emma this morning out back just wandering around. Today the weather was impeccable and the kids were really enjoying themselves.

This is a picture of my back area, but not taken today. It is just so you can see it.

backpatio.jpg

Anyway, Chaps was no where near Emma when I finished making their breakfast. She was pointed in the opposite direction of the steps leading up to me. So, when I announced breakfast, Chaps could have run in a straight line up the stairs, but instead he ran to Emma, bumped gently into her, danced a few steps so she could hear his nails, and then walked slowly in front of her, leading her up the stairs. Well, let me just say, how proud I am of our boy.

Chaps knows that eating is the most important thing in Emma’s life and it has become even more important since she went blind.

What a clever boy!

Memories – 1 of 2

May 16th, 2008 - 7:07 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and memory lovers. This blog posting and the next one are some memories of when Emma could see. I am getting over the shingles and deleting some pictures from IPhoto. None that are important, of course. However, I am running across a few you may like. This is one and the next blog posting is another. I am not going to make this into a memory lane type of thing. Just 2 pictures that you might like of Emma when she could see.

proud momma_2.jpg

It has been a solid week of shingles and let me tell you they are fierce and nasty! Please, educate yourself regarding this malady. According to what I have researched I am a bit young, but I was totally stressed out over Emma and stress is a reason they can present themselves.

Interestingly, a blurp was in USA TODAY about the dreaded shingles.
Folks, this can put you down for a month. Mine presented as a small blister under my left eyebrow. The only way I knew that it was shingles was because my Mom had shingles and it presented in the exact same place.

She did not catch hers and the virus and pox spread down her entire face and she was in horrible pain for a month. So, learn and know your body. I caught mine in the time frame it takes to make a difference. 72 hours. I still had trouble. But not near what I could have.

Memories! 2 of 2

May 16th, 2008 - 7:07 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and Memory lovers:

I was just cleaning out my IPhoto and ran across this all time favorite. It was when Emma could still see us. IMG_0577.JPG

My Mom and I always said how dreamy she looked in this picture. My Mom has it in a small frame in her kitchen. I gave the framed picture to her right after this photo was taken.

We call it, DREAMY EMMA! She looks so happy. I miss her looking into my eyes. It’s a LOVE thing.

“Shingles” and the City!

May 13th, 2008 - 9:09 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and Hating Shingles Lovers: OMG! I came down with a case of SHINGLES. Shingles can be brought on by a number of things, one of which is stress. I am sure this is the reason I came down with it. I have been so stressed out over Emma’s blindness that I guess my body broke down.

My doctor insisted on complete bed rest and I am happily obliging. Much to my delight HBO just loaded the final season of Sex and the City. 20 light hearted, mindless fun, shingles healing, delicious episodes. I have seen them all before but this time it was different. It was like I was seeing them for the first time. I really needed those hundreds of laughs. (I even cried a bit too)!

Hence, “shingles” and the city!

On the other hand, folks, shingles is no laughing matter but one to cry about if you don’t catch it in time. Please, please educate yourself on this condition that can happen to anyone that has had chicken pox. Yes, anyone that has had chicken pox. The virus lies dormant in your body and then whammo, it can come out as blisters that can be excruciatingly painful on one side of your body. It can last for weeks.
Without my proper prior knowledge I would have had a much worse case. I diagnosed it for my doctor.

You must start the anti-viral drug within 72 hours of coming down with shingles or the drug will not work.

OK, health class is over and hopefully I have saved someone from the gigantic headache of shingles.

Emmers is going for a joy ride!

May 7th, 2008 - 9:09 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and Joy Ride Lovers: When I get done with work today I am going to take Emmers and Chappers on a joy ride! I know this will perk up our girl! Anytime we get in the BHV (basset hauling vehicle) and do not go to the vet, it is a Joy Ride! I think a few new toys are in order. My friend Debbie suggested a toy with more texture to engage Emma’s sense of touch. I love that idea!

Melynda had some good ideas as well. She will absolutely love visiting with people at the toy store. I do need to keep her more active.

Emma, grab your Emma_s_4th_B_Day.jpgspring bonnet! Mommy will be home soon. Shopping always perks a gal up! Slurp!

Emma seems so depressed…

May 6th, 2008 - 7:07 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Hound and loving Emma Lovers:

Our Emma seems so depressed as of late. I talked to my vets about it and they said that dogs can become depressed just like humans. Our Emma is very lethargic. I try my best to keep the mood upbeat! I feel I do a pretty good job. I just know that Emma hates being blind. I am getting worried about her. Do you think that a dog going blind could drive them crazy? Emma has only just turned 4. Please just put yourself in Emma’s place. She went blind at 3 years old. She was the life of the party. Guarding the window, making sure I knew everything she saw.

I get a fair amount of folks telling me she will be OK, and their hound went blind, but they were Seniors. I am just aching for her. She is so sad. We had a hard day today. The birds she so loved to watch are singing and the the flower planting is going on. She laid on the couch with her back turned to me.

I am crushed. Just crushed for her. I know there is nothing I can do, and thank God she is with me. She does not understand what happened. She is still a young vibrant hound.
