Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Joni and BoB the DOg lovers! OMG we love both of these residents in Basset Hound Town.

Everyone knows that Joni just suffered the terrible sudden loss of her Homer to bladder cancer. Joni is now on a well deserved trip to Alaska for a cruise! How much fun! On her way she stopped by for a visit with BoB the DoG whom I believe lives in in Washington State.

Joni, when you get back will you tell us all about it? We want to see pictures. You look great and BoB is as handsome as ever.

Retired couple’s puppy adoption denied

May 14th, 2009 - 10:10 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and needing to know the truth lovers, (not to mention what I think)!

This headline has been causing a big sensation in Northern Kentucky……….

RETIRED COUPLE’S PUDDY ADOPTION DENIED

The article is not very long but very interesting. I have worked in rescue for about 15 years and I have seen a fair amount of situations like this one.

This couple tried to do the right thing by rescuing and they were denied. So, instead of dealing with the insanity of this rescue they went to a breeder and bought a dog. Now, the rescue puppy is still in it’s foster home. This story is getting all kinds of attention. Last night on the news, they interviewed Kathleen Winter at Dachshund Rescue of OH and she put the blame on the woman who runs the website out of IN. Kathleen went on to say that the woman in IN had made a previous recommendation that the cut off age for a puppy be 50! Then Kathleen went on to say that she would be dropping off all her puppy fosters to her. The IN woman backed down.

I think it is great that rescues have a protocol they follow, but some of them are just over the top. There has to be some room for flexibility. I have said it before and I will say it again, I was denied a basset hound from an area rescue about 17 years ago because I did not have a fenced in yard. That is just insane. I know why rescues want that box checked yes, but is there no compromise? I hear plea after plea for foster homes and how many dogs they have bursting at the seams everyone of them. All of the pounds in my area cannot place one basset hound in a rescue. Everyone of them is full.

But one bad check mark on an application and you never even get a reply back. I have been e-mailing a rescue out West for weeks and, nothing. Not even a peep. That is just rude!

Hey, I can rant and rave all I want because I work in rescue. I do rescue. I network for rescues and I do my part so I can point out what I don’t like. I am constantly pointing out what I do like.

I am appalled that this couple was denied a puppy. I am thrilled they are putting this under the media spotlight.

I was placing a basset hound recently who was on death row. The hound’s time was up. I had a place all set for the hound to go to and I got several e-mails from a rescue person who told me I was wrong to place this dog in a home where the person had some medical issues. That I was doing more harm than good for the hound. This e-mail person harassed me for days and days and tried to get others on board to tell me how bad I was. She was not able to accomplish that and I was able to block her e-mails. The pound told me she even called them to try and block me picking up the hound. They thought she was a crazy person.

OK – this is a perfect example of insanity. This person preferred that the hound be put down rather than be placed in a forever home. I am serious. This person is a part of a rescue group. I placed the hound with much success.

just-be-logical

Another thing that gets in my crawl is the wording that are on some rescue sites about their adoption rules. Here is the wording on Dachshund Rescue of OH……..

“Who we are. We are a 501c3 non for profit rescue. We have been in rescue for over 20 years. All of our dogs are in private foster homes. We do not have a shelter / kennel. We require a physical fenced in yard with no exceptions. We may consider adopting to a family with children over 10 years of age. Please email for an adoption application. Adoption fees range from $150.00 to $250.00. wildwieneranch@hotmail.com “

Give me a break.
“We may consider adopting to a family with children over 10 years of age”?

Just utter nonsense. You have to have kids over 10 and they will only “consider” adopting. Kids love dogs!!!!! How much you want to bet that they would take a donation from families with infants? Believe you me they are out there begging for money right along with all of the other rescues. If you go to their petfinder page every single dog listed says NO KIDS! They should add no old fogies as well.

Don’t forget the no exceptions rules! Get off your high horse. Sounds like someone needs to retire herself. I wonder if she has any puppies and how old she is?

Anyway, I guess you can tell I am fired up over this topic.

I cannot stand rigid, uptight behaviour. Not everyone can check every box correctly. Dogs are being left in back yards tied to trees with no food and water. Pounds are inundated with these family members at the bottom of the totem pole and you have the gaul to refuse a perfectly sound adoption? Let’s see, no kids and no old people. If the woman in IN had it her way you would have to be between 18 and 50 to adopt from them, not to mention all of her other pristine requirements.

The rescue has removed the abrasive IN lady from her disapproving pedestal for the time being.

Geesh, it reminds me of my younger days waiting in line to get into a club that charged a 10.00 cover hoping our group would be selected by the omnipotent person behind the velvet rope!

So, to try and end on an up note, I am sure this group has done plenty of good for their homeless dogs. Probably one of the best things they have done is to remove the IN lady. I bet you anything if she was reviewing her own application she would be shot down. OK, sorry. I was trying to end on a good note.

Food for thought………

May 13th, 2009 - 5:05 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Comic Strip Lovers: I am a huge fan of comic strips and I read a few every day.

As I was reading my local Ft. Thomas mini paper I noticed they did not have a comic strip so I thought I might ask them if I could do one. Here is my first try and I would love your critique. I want the good, bad and the ugly.

If they like the idea, it would be based upon Chaps Wisenheimer Wisdom. About 99% of his wisdom is original thought that comes to me while washing my face in the morning. It is a great time to reflect. Plus, Chaps and Emma are always at my feet providing inspiration. After I wash my face, I take a clean cloth and wipe them down. There is always lots of kissing involved.

Mommy redeems herself!

May 13th, 2009 - 3:03 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and redeeming yourself lovers: Well, if you saw my home page today you saw where Chaps was ready to call 911 because I ran out of potatoes. Potatoes are what Chaps and Emma get for treats for the most part. Everything else, Emma is allergic to.

So as soon as I got my act together, I ran out and got some potatoes. The raw kind, and the real kind! LOL

img_1490

This time I got a large fry! I was feeling extra guilty!

img_1488

Emma was right underneath Chaps. This batch had really extra long fries. After this picture I gave Chaps one and I tell you what, he jumped up and had my entire hand in his mouth and he made a sound like a hungry lion. He was sending me a message! “Mommy, I hope you run out of raw potatoes more often! ”

OK, OK! Just let me keep my dainty hand! LOL

I wish I could put Chaps and Emma in the Tub!

May 13th, 2009 - 11:11 am KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and needing something fun to watch at lunch lovers:

I wish I could put Chaps and Emma in the tub. It would be so good for Emma’s back.

This guy has a nice set up. I can’t believe I just spent 6 minutes watching 2 hounds get a bath when mine need one so bad! I wish this guy lived next door to me. I would pay him good American Money to wash my kids.

Emma takes her first real walk after back surgery!

May 12th, 2009 - 5:05 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Real Walk Lovers: Well, today was the day for Emma’s first real walk after her back surgery. It has been a full 8 weeks of recovery and now she was ready to test the walking waters! I am please to report she was back to her old pulling self! Wow! We are lucky enough to live in a small town with two parks. I have shown the other one before but I am not sure if I have shown this one. It is a bit to far to walk so we drive. My Mom and I can walk to it in about 20 minutes but the hounds can’t do that.

Today’s walk was a real triumph as Emma marched through the Fort park like she was leading a parade!

We live in a town called Fort Thomas.

Our town was named after General George H. Thomas.

Just a bit a history that I really never knew that much about until tonight.

Anyway, on with the walk. Like I said, Emma was stepping so proudly on her first walk and I commented to Grandma that it looked like she was marching. Grandma said, “Of course she is, she is at the Fort!” We just laughed so hard. It was a lot of fun today.

Here is a picture of the Recreational Hall. It is so pretty. There are a fair amount of weddings held here in the spring and summer.

img_1444

Right across the small road, directly in front of the Rec Hall there is a new Music Shell being constructed. You know those kinds that you watch as you sit on the lawn like nice folks! LOL! I wonder if hounds are allowed?

This is a picture of Emma and Chaps in front of the rock with information. I have a close up next. I found it so interesting that I have this history in my own back yard but I never really delved into it. It was kind of like going on a mini vacation.

img_1459

Here is the up close rock picture.

img_1457

Then, don’t tell anyone please, Chaps lifted his leg on the important rock. Mommy’s not telling and there is no photographic evidence.

img_1456

Then we took off for our walk through a field of clover. Just look at our Emma. This is her marching photo! Just as proud as punch I was. Proud as punch!

img_1477

We walked for about 30 minutes and Emma never stopped pulling and wanting to go further. She is such a joy and an inspiration!

Here is Grandma helping her up one rather large curb, but nothing Emma could not handle.

img_1448

Then it was time for a treat and rest. We watched some handsome guys playing volleyball. They looked like solders. Did I mention the treats were for all of us? LOL I did not get any pictures, they were kind of far away. SORRY! Halla. As you can see the kids are looking and listening in that direction.

img_1466

Well, our time was up and we needed to load into the Element. You know me, I cannot, not show the best part!

The END!

More standing, pretty as a picture later……….Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

We had a slight “incident” this morning…………

May 12th, 2009 - 12:12 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and slight incident (not so much) lovers. Whatever….

Anyway, I know how much Emma loves her routine. I follow the same path every morning for her comfort. Oh, don’t get me wrong, if I loaded her in the car for a morning ride to the park for a walk she would not complain one bit.

So, this morning I start off as usual. First off I turn off the fan. We love our fan. I keep it tucked in the corner so it is out of Emma’s way and she has never had a problem with it.

Well this morning, after I turned off the fan, I headed for the kitchen for their breakfast appetizer when I heard, “CLANG, CLANG “. Emma had bumped into the fan?????????? The only thing I can figure is that the carpet pathway she has been walking on was out of place and closer to the fan. Totally my fault. It scared the furry pants off of her and she went stumbling to her bed. I know, I know, try not to make a big deal out of it. Well, that’s not really my style. But try as I may, I run to her side.

So, get this. All day long, since the dreaded incident, this is what she has been doing.

img_1434

Barking at the fan. She is so mad……….

img_1439

Just look at her! She is looking right at that darn fan and she is giving it all kinds of pieces of her mind.

Oh Emma………Mamma move that bad fan.

More updates on the bad fan later……..Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma

Emma loves her sun bathing……She is a bathing beauty!

May 11th, 2009 - 1:01 pm KY Time

Howllo Fellow Basset Hound and Sunbathing Lovers: Well, I know most of us don’t actually lay in the sun anymore. However, that does not include Emma. OMG – she loves to lay in the sun and I try every summer to limit her exposure. She must go up and down those back steps 50 times a day. It’s kind of funny because she will get really hot and then come in and lay in front of the air conditioning vent, cool off and got back out to her sunbathing.

Well, she is really going to miss it this year. No steps for our Emma. I think by next summer she will be OK to use the back steps but not as much as she wants to.

For now she has to settle for this little patch of sun!

img_1432

Pooooooooooooor Emmers! LOL! She will be just fine. We have to protect those two back legs and that precious back!

More bathing beauties laying in slices of sunlight later….Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma
